Animal Enthusiasms explores how human–animal relationships are conceived, developed, and carried out in rural Pakistani Muslim society through an examination of practices such as pigeon flying, cockfighting, and dogfighting. Based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork carried between 2008 and 2018 in rural South Punjab, the book examines the crucial cultural concept of shauq (enthusiasm) and provides critical insight into changing ways of life in contemporary Pakistan. It tracks the relationships between men mediated by non-human animals and discusses how such relationships in rural areas are coded in complex ways. The chapters draw on debates around transformations of animal activities over time, the changing forms of human–animal intimacy and their impact on familial relationships, and rural Punjabi values attached to the performance of masculine honour. The book will be of interest to scholars of anthropology, multi-species ethnography, gender and masculinity studies, and South Asian studies.

This book explores how equestrians are highly invested in the idea of profound connection between horse and human and focuses on the ethical problem of knowing horses. In describing how ‘true’ connection with horses matters, Rosalie Jones McVey investigates what sort of thing comes to count as a ‘good relationship’ and how riders work to get there. Drawing on fieldwork in the British horse world, she illuminates the ways in which equestrian culture instils the idea that horse people should know their horses better. Using horsemanship as one exemplary instance where ‘truth’ holds ethical traction, the book demonstrates the importance of epistemology in late modern ethical life. It also raises the question of whether, and how, the concept of truth should matter to multispecies ethnographers in their ethnographic representations of animals.

This book explores the multispecies triad of cattle ranching, focusing on how humans, horses, and cattle meet, interact, and shape a common multispecies culture. Based on a year of horseback ethnography in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, it provides a detailed account of the everyday lives of cowboys, cowboying women, and ranchers as well as of horses and cattle. It highlights the different ways that humans, horses, and cattle come together on working ranches and in settings such as rodeos and tourist operations inspired by the American West. By focusing, empirically and conceptually, on the multispecies triad, the author moves beyond binary human–animal approaches and develops the idea of multispecies intersectionality. In particular, this brings a gender perspective to the kinds of interactions that the various seasons in the Rockies require. Furthermore, the author discusses the possibilities of a multispecies concept of power by engaging empirically, conceptually, and methodologically the "energy bubbles" with which humans, horses, and cattle communicate with and move each other. The chapters also feature examples of artful methods such as ethnographic poetry including rhyming field notes as well as field drawings and analytical drawings. With this, the book showcases the use of sensory data collection and creative and artful methodologies that allow for the capture of what lies beyond human language in multispecies interactions.

The Presence of Elephants is an anthropological consideration of coexistence, grounded in people’s everyday interactions with Asian elephants. Drawing on two years of ethnographic fieldwork in Assam, Northeast India, this book examines human–elephant copresence and how minds, tasks, identities, and places are shared between the two species. Sharing lives and landscapes with such formidable beings is a continuously shifting and negotiated exchange inherently composed of tensions, asymmetries, and uncertainties – especially in the Anthropocene when breakdowns in communication increasingly have a violent effect.Developing a multifaceted picture of human–elephant relations in a postcolonial setting, each chapter focuses on a different dimension of encounter, where elephants adapt to human norms, people are subject to elephant projects, and novel interspecies possibilities emerge at the threshold of nature and society. Vulnerability is a common experience intensified in contemporary human–elephant relations, felt through the elephant’s power to disrupt and transform human lives, as well as the risks these endangered animals are exposed to. This book focuses on the work of Chinese contemporary artist Liang Shaoji and emphasises the contribution of multispecies ethnography to art criticism. Over three decades, Liang has worked with domestic silkworms to craft art that embodies the Daoism-inspired ecological motif of ‘ziran’. Are silkworms co-authors or alienated fabricators in such creative practice? Based on a multi-sited ethnographic study conducted in China, the book delves into Liang’s artistic techniques involving close collaboration with silkworm farmers and biologists. In doing so, it makes a significant contribution to discussions of non-human agency and labour. The author unveils the intricate power dynamics between silkworms and their caretakers, revealing multi-sensory knowledge, anthropomorphic kinship, and moral dilemmas inherent in working with these insects.
