A significant part of understanding how people use geographic information and technology concerns human cognition. This text provides an examination of the cognitive aspects of human-computer interaction for geographic information systems (GIS). Cognitive aspects are treated in relation to individual, group, behavioural, institutional and cultural perspectives. Extensions of GIS in the form of spatial decision support systems and SDSS for groups are part of the geographic information technology considered. The intended audience includes: geographic information users, systems analysts and system designers, and researchers in human-computer interaction.

The Urban Data Management Society has organised international symposia at various locations throughout Europe since 1971, and UDMS 2013 marks its second visit to London. From its outset, UDMS has highlighted changes and trends in urban data and urban data management. However, the rate of emergence of new data and new technologies has never been as rapid as it is now. Trends including smart cities, smart phones, social media, 3D modelling, volunteered geographic information, building information modelling and the internet of things all generate information about the urban environment and the people who live there. Additionally the volume of data generated in part through such techniques has in turn resulted in research into ‘big data’ – how best to handle the data, analyse it, visualise it in different contexts. Thus the challenges and opportunities facing those working with these new types of urban data are manifold. Given this, the general theme for UDMS 2013 was "Recent and Emerging Trends in the Management of New Urban Data."This book contains 20 papers selected from the long papers that were submitted for UDMS 2013. Each paper was reviewed by three independent academic reviewers from around the world, both for academic quality and for clarity in communication. The book is intended to be suitable for different readers – from city planners and architects to academics, students and policy makers and those involved in urban planning.

The present publication focusses the attention on new avenues in regional information and knowledge management, while we will zoom in particularly on the potential promises and hurdles of digital technology. This digital challenge has already generated a wealth of implications in the area of smart or intelligent cities, but as yet far less has been achieved in the field of regional planning and regional science. There is clearly a need for a more systematic and wide-ranging assessment and presentation of emerging approaches and concepts in this field, for instance, in regard to principles (e.g. geographic rule modeling), methodologies (e.g. blockchain systems), data analytics (e.g. machine learning) and data governance (e.g. data sovereignty) of regional information and knowledge. Especially in our ‘big data’ era, a systematic, comprehensible and reliable acquisition, storage, sharing and handling of data (e.g. on the basis of systematic decomposition and filtering principles) is more needed than ever before.The present study seeks to present a selection of state-of-the-art contributions on advanced – often digitally-oriented – regional information and knowledge management foundations, principles and practices written by several experts in the field of spatial informatics. These contributions were collected with a view to the design of a comprehensive knowledge and research agenda, which was discussed during a brainstorm workshop in Lyon, France (October 2021).This book covers various fields of interest, such as GeoAI, knowledge modelling, IoT and scalability, space syntax, rule extraction, data governance and data self-sovereignty. It is concluded with a knowledge and research agenda outlining future endeavors in the field of the spatial information sciences (or spatial informatics).

Visual Information Systems on the Move Following the success of previous International Conferences of VISual Information Systems held in Melbourne, San Diego, Amsterdam, Lyon, Taiwan, Miami, and San Francisco, the 8th International Conference on VISual Information Systems held in Amsterdam dealt with a variety of aspects, from visual systems of multimedia information, to systems of visual information such as image databases. Handling of visual information is boosted by the rapid increase of hardware and Internet capabilities. Now, advances in sensors have turned all kinds of information into digital form. Technology for visual information systems is more urgently needed than ever before. What is needed are new computational methods to index, compress, retrieve and discover pictorial information, new algorithms for the archival of and access to very large amounts of digital images and videos, and new systems with friendly visual interfaces. Visual information processing, features extraction and aggregation at semantic level and content-based retrieval, and the study of user intention in query processing will continue to be areas of great interest. This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Visual Information Systems, VISUAL 2000, held in Lyon, France in November 2000. The 37 revised full papers presented together with eight posters and two invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The papers are organized in topical sections on image information systems, video information systems, visual querying, color, shape-based retrieval, image databases, video indexing, image retrieval, and bench marking.

The Visual Information Systems International Conference series is designed to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from diverse areas of computing including computer vision, databases, human–computer interaction, information security, image processing, information visualization and mining, as well as knowledge and information management to exchange ideas, discuss challenges, present their latest results and to advance research and development in the construction and application of visual information systems. Following previous conferences held in Melbourne (1996), San Diego (1997), Amsterdam (1999), Lyon (2000), Taiwan (2002), Miami (2003), San Francisco (2004) and Amsterdam (2005), the Ninth International Conference on Visual Information Systems, VISUAL2007, was held in Shanghai, China, June 28–29, 2007. Over the years, the visual information systems paradigm continues to evolve, and the unrelenting exponential growth in the amount of digital visual data underlines the escalating importance of how such data are effectively managed and deployed. VISUAL2007 received 117 submissions from 15 countries and regions. Submitted full papers were reviewed by more than 60 international experts in the field. This volume collects 54 selected papers presented at VISUAL2007. Topics covered in these papers include image and video retrieval, visual biometrics, intelligent visual information processing, visual data mining, ubiquitous and mobile visual information systems, visual semantics, 2D/3D graphical visual data retrieval and applications of visual information systems.
