Sacred Heritage in Japan is the first volume to explicitly address the topics of Japanese religion and heritage preservation in connection with each other. The book examines what happens when places of worship and ritual practices are rebranded as national culture. It also considers the impact of being designated tangible or intangible cultural properties and, more recently, as UNESCO World or Intangible Heritage. Drawing on primary ethnographic and historical research, the contributions to this volume show the variety of ways in which different actors have contributed to, negotiated, and at times resisted the transformation of religious traditions into heritage. They analyse the conflicts that emerge about questions of signification and authority during these processes of transformation. The book provides important new perspectives on the local implications of UNESCO listings in the Japanese context and showcases the diversity of "sacred heritage" in present-day Japan. Combining perspectives from heritage studies, Japanese studies, religious studies, history, and social anthropology, the volume will be of interest to scholars and students who want to learn more about the diversity of local responses to heritage conservation in non-Western societies. Water Powers is an interdisciplinary collection that presents timely, original research on sacred aquatic animals—from dragons and nagas to crocodiles, eels, dugongs, and whales—and environmental change. Contributors examine the past and present significance of these creatures in Nepal, India, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Japan, Okinawa, Indonesia, and Aotearoa-New Zealand to explore the diverse relationships between animals, deities, humans, and bodies of water. In so doing, they challenge narratives about disenchantment as a core aspect of modernization, seeking to give the sacred creatures and the rituals associated with them a more central place in debates about environmental degradation and conservation initiatives. Their work converges around three core themes: (1) divine embodiment and materiality (how sacred beings manifest themselves and act in the world); (2) making and crossing boundaries (how aquatic animals are constrained by but also challenge physical, ontological, and conceptual boundaries); and (3) crises and relationality (how more-than-human relationships change in response to environmental and other crises). Water Powers will appeal to scholars and students across multiple fields, including anthropology, religious studies, environmental humanities, geography, development studies, history, and archaeology. How do humans invest nonhuman entities with agency, personhood, and feelings? Responding to calls to reconsider human-nonhuman relations in a time of global polycrisis, Animating Action offers a novel framework for imagining connections between animated matter and political action. Rather than studying animism as a specific cultural tradition distinct from supposedly non-animistic cultures and their putatively disenchanted worldviews, the authors argue that practices of animation are universal, even as they stress that specific methods of animation differ according to time and place. Drawing on their expertise in the history of science, religious studies, media studies, and the environmental humanities, the authors present a new theory of animation as action. Through cases from contemporary Japan, Vietnam, and elsewhere, they investigate how humans make persons through rituals, use the technique of compositing to construct worlds in illustrated films, and evoke feelings and associations to forge a sense of intimacy with robots. Additionally, they show how humans deanimate entities that have become unruly, dysfunctional, or unwanted. These concrete practices have political consequences. Animated films may encourage audiences to accept the environmentally destructive status quo, while robotic designs may naturalize and reinforce harmful gender hierarchies and biases. But animating practices also hold transformative political potential: a person-making ritual may give animals voice in courts of law, and the very techniques roboticists use to evoke positive feelings in human users can provide fruitful models for resisting the harmful effects of technologies that manipulate users by emulating agency and empathy. Animating Action does not simply advocate an alternative worldview or story. Rather, it shows how people can deploy existing animation techniques to change the world for the better. It offers both a call to action and a model for how to instigate transformative change.
