An Elementary Transition to Abstract Mathematics will help students move from introductory courses to those where rigor and proof play a much greater role. The text is organized into five basic parts: the first looks back on selected topics from pre-calculus and calculus, treating them more rigorously, and it covers various proof techniques; the second part covers induction, sets, functions, cardinality, complex numbers, permutations, and matrices; the third part introduces basic number theory including applications to cryptography; the fourth part introduces key objects from abstract algebra; and the final part focuses on polynomials.Features: The material is presented in many short chapters, so that one concept at a time can be absorbed by the student. Two "looking back" chapters at the outset (pre-calculus and calculus) are designed to start the student’s transition by working with familiar concepts. Many examples of every concept are given to make the material as concrete as possible and to emphasize the importance of searching for patterns. A conversational writing style is employed throughout in an effort to encourage active learning on the part of the student.

This book examines the global/local intersections and tensions at play in the literary production from Aotearoa New Zealand through its engagement in the global marketplace.Combining postcolonial and world literature methodologies contributors chart the global relocation of national culture from the nineteenth century to the present exploring what "New Zealand literature" means in different creative, teaching, and publishing contexts. This volume maps the phenomenon of medievalism in Aotearoa, initially as an import by the early white settler society, and as a form of nation building that would reinforce Britishness and ancestral belonging. This colonial narrative underpins the volume’s focus on the imperial relationship in chapters on the academic study of the Middle Ages, on medievalism in film and music, in manuscript and book collections, and colonial stained glass and architecture. Through the alternative 21st-century frameworks of a global Middle Ages and Aotearoa’s bicultural nationalism, the volume also introduces Maori understandings of the ancestral past that parallel the European epoch and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, the phenomenon of global right-wing medievalism, as evidenced in the Alt-right extremism underpinning the Christchurch mosque attack of 2019.The 11 chapters trace the transcultural moves and networks that comprise the shift from the 20th-century study of the Middle Ages as an historical period to manifestations of medievalism as the reception and interpretation of the medieval past in postmedieval times. Ecocritical Explorations of the Climate Crisis expands postcolonial precarity studies by addressing the current climate crisis and threats to the habitability of the planet from a range of ecocritical and environmental perspectives. The collection uses planetary thought-action praxis that acknowledges the interconnectedness of all forms of life in addressing the socioecological issues facing humanity: accelerating climate change, over-exploitation of natural resources, and the Global North–South divide. With reference to contemporary cultural productions, such praxis seeks to examine the ideas, images, and narratives that either represent or impede potential disasters like the so-called sixth extinction of the planet, that inspire the dismantling of carbon democracies arising in the wake of neoliberalism, and that address rising inequality with precarious conditions in the transition to renewable energy. The different chapters explore literary and visual representations of planetary precarity, identifying crisis-responsive genres and cultural formats, and assessing approaches to environment-re/making that call for repair, recovery and sustainability. In imagining future habitability, they deploy diverse critical frameworks such as queer utopias, zero-waste lifestyles, alternative ecologies, and adaptations to the uninhabitable. The collection tackles problems of global vulnerability and examines precarity as a condition of resilience and resistance through collective actions and solidarities and innovative constructions of the planet’s survival as a shared home. It engages with current postcolonial debates, uses intersectional methodologies, and introduces contemporary literary, visual concepts, and narrative types.

Katherine Mansfield and Germany is the first study of Mansfield's encounter with Germany and all things German: language, culture, society. This crucial area of her life and art has been relatively neglected, even though Germany held Mansfield in its thrall all her life, as myriad associations found in her fiction, notebooks, and letters confirm. Her immersion in the German language and culture was formative, influencing her early poetry and experimental prose writing, and as stories published in her first book In a German Pension (1911) show, was an important foundation for her cosmopolitan, (post)colonial modernism.The 13 essays here offer insights onto the German intellectual and artistic heritages of the early 20th century that influenced Mansfield: Nietzsche in philosophy, the music of Wagner, the German Minnesänger and poetry, Heine's lyric verse, and German folk lore and fairy tales. They study the educational and romantic avenues to this heritage; her passion for the world of music through the Beauchamp family circle, her study of the cello, intense relations with the musical Trowell family, her "long[ing] for German" at Queen's College in London, because taught by the charismatic Walter Rippmann, and her crucially important seven-month stay in 1909 in the Bavarian spa town of Wörishofen, where she wrote the satires of In a German Pension. Mansfield's start as a professional writer is considered through biographical, psychoanalytical, and literary-critical readings: these include her literary responses to Bavarian culture, her fraught personal circumstances, her antipodean modernist practice of transposing New Zealand perspectives onto the "Germanic" narrative space, her use of Sekundenstil, her satire of Bavarian patriarchal attitudes, and her adaptations of Märchen. There are historical readings of Wörishofen and Rotorua as spa towns renowned for alternative health cures, of Mansfield's publications in the New Age in 1910 in light of debates about women's emancipation and accelerating Anglo-German tensions prior to World War One, while her German legacy is approached through a study of translations of her stories made under Nazi socialism and the German Democratic Republic.In examining the enduring impact of German literature, philosophy, and music on Mansfield's artistic and intellectual development, this volume expands knowledge of the diversity of the continental landscapes that shaped her world view.Katherine Mansfield and Germany will be of principal interest to Katherine Mansfield scholars.
