Nunca se había visto en la Historia un tipo de violencia como la desencadenada por los nazis, tanto en Alemania como fuera de su país, tras su llegada al poder en 1933: ¿Cómo una sociedad, culta, patria de filósofos, músicos, premios Nobel..., se vio atraída y secundó tal régimen del horror? Hay razones de carácter cultural e histórico, pero también hubo una normativa legal, unos métodos de actuación y sobre todo una divulgación de los mismos, poco estudiados hasta ahora, que fueron puestos en práctica por los distintos colectivos sociales. Unos fundamentos que se sintetizan en el mito del periodo en el que la raza nórdica vivía felizmente en armonía con la naturaleza, desnaturalización y aculturación que se produjo por el contagio de cultural foráneas, en concreto la judeocristiana y el derecho romano. La solución era por tanto volver a la ley de la naturaleza, a la ley de la sangre. Juristas, médicos, historiadores, filósofos, científicos, periodistas, artistas de todo tipo, cineastas..., elaboraron y difundieron las teorías que hicieron de la raza fundamento de derecho, y con la ley de la sangre y de la naturaleza justificaron todo: la procreación, el exterminio y su dominio del mundo. ¿Existe alguna relación entre la gestión de una empresa actual y la organización del trabajo en la Alemania nazi?Reinhard Höhn es el arquetipo del tecnócrata al servicio del Tercer Reich. Como jurista, apasionado de la historia militar, se distinguió por sus reflexiones sobre las relaciones entre el Estado y la "comunidad", definida por la raza y su "espacio vital"; y sobre la organización de las instituciones al servicio del Tercer Reich, las nuevas estructuras que había que crear y las reformas que había que acometer. Labor que compartió con otros altos funcionarios del nazismo como Herbert Backe, Oswald Pohl, Hans Kammler, Albert Speer, Wilhelm Stuckart... Höhn llegó a alcanzar el grado de general de las SS.Al terminar la guerra, Reinhard Höhn creó en Bad Harzburg una escuela de negocios en la que con los años se fueron formando las futuras elites de la gestión y dirección de empresas alemanas, las que contribuyeron a hacer el "milagro alemán". Unos 600.000 directivos de las principales corporaciones alemanas, sin contar los 100.000 que tuvieron una formación a distancia o adquirieron las enseñanzas de la escuela a través de sus seminarios o de sus numerosos manuales de éxito. Es decir, un buen número de las elites de la economía y de la patronal alemanas se formó en la dirección de empresas y de los recursos humanos siguiendo el modelo de gestión empresarial que se había dado en el nazismo. Un modelo que se basa en la organización jerárquica del trabajo por definición de objetivos, pero fomentando las iniciativas particulares y creativas, delegando responsabilidades a los trabajadores que pueden elegir libremente los medios para acometerlos. Pero que, lamentablemente en este caso, sirvió para desarrollar la economía de guerra del Tercer Reich y el exterminio de millones de personas.

La «cultura» era en un principio para el nacional socialismo la simple transcripción de la naturaleza: reverenciar a los árboles y a los ríos, reproducirse, alimentarse, pelear como los demás animales, defender únicamente la propia horda... La desnaturalización se produjo cuando los semitas se instalaron en Grecia, cuando la evangelización introdujo el judeocristianismo y cuando finalmente la Revolución francesa terminó de instaurar construcciones ideológicas absurdas (igualdad, compasión, abstracción del derecho...). Para salvar la raza nórdico-germánica había que operar una «revolución cultural», volver a encontrar el modo de ser de los antepasados y hacer que de nuevo coincidieran cultura y naturaleza. Recreando así el derecho y la moral fue cómo el hombre germánico creyó poder actuar de conformidad con lo que exigía su supervivencia. Gracias a la reescritura del derecho y de la moral, golpear y matar se convertían en legal y moral. A través de aspectos como la lectura del estoicismo y de Platón durante el III Reich, el uso de Kant y de su imperativo categórico o la recepción del derecho romano en Alemania, Johann Chapoutot pone de manifiesto cómo se operó la reescritura de la historia de Occidente y por qué canales llegaron tales ideas a los actores de los crímenes nazis.

Ellos no sabian lo que podia suceder. Nosotros si. Una advertencia urgente sobre los peligros que acechan a nuestras democracias. Lejos de ser un desenlace inevitable, el ascenso de Hitler al poder fue el resultado de las acciones conscientes de unas elites politicas, economicas y militares que, cegadas por sus propios intereses, creyeron poder manipular al nazismo y plegarlo a su voluntad. No hubo fatalidad historica ni procesos imparables: fueron decisiones concretas, tomadas por personas concretas, las que franquearon el camino al desastre. Von Papen, Hindenburg, Hugenberg o los industriales Krupp y Thyssen apostaron por una alianza peligrosa que termino devorandolos: el flirteo de la derecha conservadora con la extrema derecha, motivado por el miedo al cambio y la defensa de sus privilegios, acabo volviendose en su contra y abriendo las puertas del infierno. A traves de documentos ineditos y un analisis minucioso, Chapoutot reconstruye las intrigas, pactos secretos y errores fatales que convirtieron una democracia vibrante en el umbral del totalitarismo. Pero esta no es solo una leccion de historia: tambien es una advertencia urgente sobre nuestro presente. Porque los mecanismos que erosionaron Weimar siguen acechando.
