This collection of essays by internationally renowned women scholars both contests the notion of fundamentalism and attempts to find places where it might convege with women's roles in the various world's religions. The essayists explore fundamentalism as a system or method of limiting women's religious roles and examine the ways that women embrace certain aspects of fundamentalism. The essays cover Hinduism, Buddhism, Confuciansim, Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. The contributors investigate the ways that women "fight back" against fundamentalist conceptions of family, gender roles, doctrinal practices, ritual practices, and God or theistic constructs. The writers reassert and preserve their identities by challenging the static categories of fundamentalism. The essays contain deep and powerful explorations of the intersections of culture, religion, and feminism.

In the first three volumes of this series, Paul Nathanson and Katherine Young challenge theories about patriarchy that ideological forms of feminism have promoted. In this volume, they argue that we must replace those misandric theories with one that takes seriously the needs and problems of boys and men no less than those of girls and women; at the same time, they add, we must maintain the reforms that egalitarian forms of feminism have promoted. With both factors in mind, they trace the history of men – that is, culturally organized perceptions of the male body and its masculine functions – over the past ten thousand years. They show how these perceptions have evolved in connection with a series of technological and cultural revolutions: horticultural, agricultural, industrial, military, and now reproductive. This new approach sets the stage for understanding a profound and growing problem that our society must face: the increasing inability of boys and men to create or sustain a healthy collective identity. The authors define this as an identity that is distinctive, necessary, and therefore publicly valued. Without a healthy and positive identity, two current trends will continue: giving up (dropping out of school, society, or even life itself) and attacking a society that has no room for men specifically as men, believing that even a negative identity, acted out in antisocial ways, is better than none at all.

Paul Nathanson and Katherine Young believe that this reveals a shift in the United States and Canada to a worldview based on ideological feminism, which presents all issues from the point of view of women and, in the process, explicitly or implicitly attacks men as a class. They argue that ideological feminism is silently reshaping law, public policy, education, and journalism.

Nathanson and Young urge us to rethink prevalent assumptions about men that result in profoundly disturbing stereotypes that foster contempt. Spreading Misandry breaks new ground by discussing misandry in moral terms rather than purely psychological or sociological ones and by criticizing not only ideological feminism but other ideologies on both the left and the right.

The Annual Review of Women in World Religions is polymethodic, interdisciplinary, and multitraditional in its approach to the study of women and religion. It not only allows the comparative dimension to appear in bolder relief, but also helps establish a dialogue between the two solitudes of humanistic and social scientific studies in the field. This annual encourages the exploration of horizons and perspectives in women's studies not possible otherwise. It is not confined in scope to the traditional religions-it also includes new religious movements within its scope, while at the same time providing an outlet for specialized studies on women in traditional religions to reach a wider audience. It thus incorporates both the traditional and contemporary dimension. This work grew out of the publication of a book released in 1987 by SUNY Press entitled Women in World Religions, edited by Arvind Sharma. The reception indicated that it met a felt need. It also vindicated the historical and phenomenological approach to the study of women in world religions. The relevance of both subject and method called for an ongoing forum to continue discussing themes covered in the book. this journal provides such a forum. The first volume contains essays by Mary Gerhart (Another Troy for Her to Burn: The True Story of Euripides's Helen), Denyse Rockey (Three Faces of the Great Goddess: Shulamite, Cinderella, Black Virgin), Winnie Tomm (Goddess Consciousness and Social Realities: The 'Permeable Self'), and Katherine K. Young (Goddesses, Feminists, and Scholars).

CHOICE 1999 Outstanding Academic BooksAddressing religion and feminism on a global scale, this unprecedented book contains a nuanced and fine-tuned treatment of seven of the world's religions from a feminist perspective by leading women scholars. Feminism and World Religions contains chapters on Hinduism by Vasudha Narayanan, Buddhism by Rita M. Gross, Confucianism by Terry Woo, Taoism by Karen McLaughlin and Eva Wong, Judaism by Ellen M. Umansky, Christianity by Rosemary Radford Ruether, and Islam by Riffat Hassan, along with a general introduction and a postscript by Katherine K. Young and a preface by Arvind Sharma. The fact that these authors share a dual but undivided commitment both to themselves as women and to their traditions as adherents imparts to their voices a prophetic quality, and if Mahatma Gandhi is to be believed, even scriptural value.

Modern Western approaches to India often have focused on metaphysics at the expense of ethics, leading many to see Hinduism as only concerned with the esoteric and the otherworldly. The chapters of this book offer case study explorations that are selected and presented to invite comparisons with the modern West. Such comparisons will help to remove the apparent otherworldly nature of Hindu thought from the minds of Western readers, as well as give depth and new significance to Indian ideas in the areas of medical ethics, social ethics, and human rights. The case studies demonstrate that Indian thought has not ignored deep reflection on ethical problems that are presenting serious challenges to the modern world. They demonstrate that Hinduism has a firm grounding in ethics, even when the most difficult questions are raised.

Just as a mirror captures a large area within its small limit, this journal reflects the otherwise far-ranging and far-reaching phenomena that are categorized as "women and religion." The Annual Review of Women in World Religions has been conceived as a forum for the latest historical and anthropological research on women in all religions. It is also a form for discussion of contemporary trends, such as the influence of secularism, fundamentalism, or feminism on women and religion. Accordingly, it contributes to the on-going project to add to our basic knowledge about women, and helps evaluate the past as well as the present through insights generated by gender studies today.Within the boundaries of academic scholarship, the editors seek to include the research of those who are both inside and outside the traditions. Moreover, the book encourages women and men of all beliefs to participate in the on-going dialogue which it represents and promotes. This journal is polymethodic, interdisciplinary, and multitraditional in its approach to the study of women and religion. It not only allows the comparative dimension to appear in bolder relief, but also helps to establish a dialogue between the two solitudes of humanistic and social scientific studies in the field.Volume III contains the following essays: Rabi'ah as Mystic, Muslim and Woman by Barbara Lois Helms; Slighted Grandmothers: The Need for Increased Study of Female Spirits and Spirituality in Native American Religions by Jordan Paper; Women of Medieval South India in Hindu Temple Ritual: Text and Practice by Leslie C. Orr; and Confucianism and Women in Modern Korea: Continuity, Change and Conflict by Edward Y. J. Chung.
