After the postmodern turn, every tradition seeks the right to have their own rules of rational discourse. The crucial question is: are there ways to communicate between the traditions so that the traditions do not need to give up their identities in order to take part in conversation? Vainio examines the basic assumptions behind well known types of Christian theology and seeks ways in which they might interact with one other and with other non-Christian traditions without capitulation of their identities. Vainio claims that there are religious identities that can be negotiated and communicated, and that there are ecclesiastical doctrines which can be meaningfully discussed among churches. This book explores three key areas: analysis of the uses of 'fideism' within classical Christian theology; clarification of different types of theological method that seek to express the task of theology in contemporary setting; an explanation of the contours of religious identity and rationality which takes seriously both classical Christian identity and pluralistic contexts where most of the Christian communities dwell nowadays. The proposal for "negotiability" of Christian identity draws together ideas from, among others, virtue epistemology, reformed epistemology, communitarianism, and feminist sensibilities.

The reformer Martin Luther is one of the most influential and controversial theologians in the history of the church. While his ideas are rooted in the currents of medieval theology, he frequently seems to offer radical solutions to classical theological problems. Luther's place in the history of the church is convoluted, yet the themes and issues addressed in his writings remain relevant for the church today, as evidenced by his continued influence on Protestant dialogue. This enduring relevance encourages and even demands fresh, critical interpretation of Luther with the benefit of modern perspectives.Rather than offering an apology of Luther, Luther under Scrutiny advances such a fresh interpretation, a critical account of many of Luther's central ideas that set the Reformation into motion. These include, among other things, his views on the possibility of knowledge and the fallenness of reason, his contentious account of bound choice, and his appropriation of the patristic doctrine of theosis. Olli-Pekka Vainio, a member of the Finnish School of Luther research, asks whether Luther's radical views end up undermining his entire theological vision.In order to save theology, Luther seems to be on the path of destroying the very foundations of theology as a public endeavor. The Reformer Martin Luther is the source of endless fascination and dispute. Not only his antagonists but also his supporters have created a host of representations of his thought. On the one hand, Catholic and other similar voices have accused Luther of being the major agent in the birth of modern secularism. On the other hand, Lutherans themselves are divided on the meaning of Reformation. In view of all these interpretations and dismissals of Luther and the Lutheran Reformation, it requires a certain boldness to claim that Luther''s theology is intellectually fascinating and contains exceptional resources. This is precisely what the present volume claims. The studies collected in this volume aim at showing in which sense Luther remains a fully Catholic and genuinely Augustinian theologian who is not so much a forerunner of problematic modernity as a representative of classical Christianity. At the same time, Luther''s theology contains ideas that can be made fruitful in dialogue with currents like communitarianism or Radical Orthodoxy. The volume consists of articles written by scholars affiliated with the project known as the New Finnish Interpretation of Luther. The unity of the early Lutheran reformation, even in the central themes such as justification, is still an open question. This study examines the development of the doctrine of justification in the works of the prominent first and second generation Lutheran reformers from the viewpoints of divine participation and effectivity of justification. Generally, Luther's idea of Christ's real presence in the believer as the central part of justification is maintained and taught by all Reformers while they simultaneously develop various theological frameworks to depict the nature of participation. However, in some cases these developed models are contradictory, which causes tension between theologians resulting in the invention of new doctrinal formulations.
