The art of still life painting is a celebrated part of Dutch culture, but before still life emerged, there were illustrators who delicately illuminated handwritten manuscripts with images of flora and fauna to add emotional power to a written work.One of the most celebrated practitioners of this style was Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1601). In the 1590s the Emperor Rudolf II commissioned Hoefnagel to add his illuminations to the Mira calligraphiae monumenta, a mid-16th-century manuscript on the art of calligraphy by Georg Bocskay. The page reproduced here is known as Damselfly, Carnation, Insect, Caterpillar, Ladybird, English Walnut, and Marine Mollusk.

Ancient Greek pottery offers a fascinating window into the past of a lost culture. Reproduced here is a mixing vessel made in a Greek colony in southern Italy between 415 and 400 BC. A gathering of deities decorates the front, with the twin gods Apollo and Artemis occupying the centre of the scene.

Our Viennese Fruit design features the work of celebrated Art Nouveau illustrator Anton Seder. It originates from his 1890 publication, Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe, or The Plant in Art and Trade. Seder s harmonious use of space, plethora of details and candid depiction of natural elements drew us to this piece.
