The Lindau Gospels’ bindings were designed to inspire awe when the book was carried in processions or displayed on an altar. Paperblanks Lindau journal depicts the back cover of this bookmaking masterwork, created near Salzburg between 750 and 800 AD. It was tooled in gilt, silver and enamel and adorned with jewels, making for a powerful manifestation of art as a vehicle for belief.

This Nova Stella cover comes from the 1789 binding of Missale Sacri Ordinis Praedicatorum, printed during the Settecento period by Octavio Puccinelli publishers. During this time bookbinding became at once simpler and yet more complex. The sewing was done on recessed cords to give the spines a smooth appearance and so, while the structure of books was uncomplicated, decoration became increasingly elaborate.

The art of still life painting is a celebrated part of Dutch culture, but before still life emerged, there were illustrators who delicately illuminated handwritten manuscripts with images of flora and fauna to add emotional power to a written work.One of the most celebrated practitioners of this style was Joris Hoefnagel (1542–1601). In the 1590s the Emperor Rudolf II commissioned Hoefnagel to add his illuminations to the Mira calligraphiae monumenta, a mid-16th-century manuscript on the art of calligraphy by Georg Bocskay.
