Radical Humanism uses concepts from Marxism, anarchism, critical theory, psychoanalysis, and African, Asian, and Latin American philosophies to critique bourgeois, liberal, and Eurocentric humanism(s) from the perspectives of Indigenous studies, Black studies, and postcolonial/decolonial studies. The book problematizes and expands the Euromodern conception of the “human” to document and develop critical epistemologies, ontologies, and methodologies that honor the complexities of humans around the world. It takes a particular focus on those who have historically been excluded from the category of “human,” including Indigenous, Black, and Global Southern humans. Contributors critically engage with humanism from a pluriversal perspective, honoring non- European ways of knowing and being, while providing a dialoguebetween multiple voices and viewpoints. The book will be of interest to scholars and advanced students interested in decolonizing perspectives in psychology, the humanities, and social sciences.
Writings for a Liberation Psychoanalysis
Politicizing the Unconscious from the Core of a Crumbling Empire

In Writings for a Liberation Psychoanalysis, Robert K. Beshara establishes a groundbreaking framework that links the Freudo-Lacanian tradition directly to transmodernity and decoloniality. Traditional psychoanalytic institutions have long been tethered to colonial logic, often pathologizing the marginalized rather than challenging the structures that oppress them, but Beshara shows how psychoanalysis can be a tool for liberation.By re-thinking psychoanalysis from the Exterior perspective of the oppressed, Beshara argues that the radical seeds of liberation are extimate or already present within the praxis—waiting to be activated through ethical listening and free association. This work synthesizes the transformative insights of scholars such as Edward Said, Paulo Freire, and Enrique Dussel to develop a “Psychoanalysis of the Oppressed” or “Liberation Psychoanalysis.” More than just a theoretical intervention, this book offers a roadmap for liberation as an analectical materialist praxis—a way to theorize oppression and prefigure a concrete utopian horizon by politicizing the unconscious from within the core of a crumbling empire. This book is designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students, scholars, and professionals interested in psychoanalysis, liberation, and decoloniality. It would be particularly suitable for courses on Liberation Philosophy, Liberation Psychology, Decoloniality, Postcolonialism, and Radical Psychoanalysis.

This book examines the theoretical links between Edward W. Said and Sigmund Freud as well the relationship between psychoanalysis, postcolonialism and decoloniality more broadly. The author begins by offering a comprehensive review of the literature on psychoanalysis and postcolonialism, which is contextualized within the apparatus of racialized capitalism. In the close analysis of the interconnections between the Freud and Said that follows, there is an attempt to decolonize the former and psychoanalyze the latter. He argues that decolonizing Freud does not mean canceling him; rather, he employs Freud’s sharpest insights for our time, by extending his critique of modernity to coloniality. It is also advanced that psychoanalyzing Said does not mean psychologizing the man; instead the book's aim is to demonstrate the influence of psychoanalysis on Said’s work. It is asserted that Said began with Freud, repressed him, and then Freud returned. Reading Freud and Said side byside allows for the theorization of what the author calls contrapuntal psychoanalysis as liberation praxis, which is discussed in-depth in the final chapters. This book, which builds on the author’s previous work, Decolonial Psychoanalysis, will be a valuable text to scholars and students from across the psychology discipline with an interest in Freud, Said and the broader relationship between psychoanalysis and colonialism.
