Through candid discussions with young and old Nicaraguans, men and women, Lancaster constructs an account of the successes and failures of the 1979 Sandinista Revolution, documenting the effects of war and embargo on the cultural and economic fabric of Nicaraguan society. He tracks the break up of families, surveys informal networks that allow female-headed households to survive, explores the gradual transformation of the culture of machismo, and reveals a world where heroic efforts have been stymied and the best hopes deferred. La vida es dura no es una ensonacion romantica sobre la caida de una revolucion. Se trata de una obra etnografica escrita con gran densidad que intenta describir el mundo cotidiano de la gente corriente durante una epoca de guerra y crisis, prestando especial atencion a las instituciones de la vida familiar, es decir, las relaciones de genero, las discriminaciones de color y la sexualidad. Al medir la brecha cada vez mayor entre las aspiraciones revolucionarias y las experiencias vividas, inscribe una historia sobre como la revolucion nunca llego a ser muy revolucionaria, y como las penurias y dislocaciones de la guerra de la Contra afectaron desproporcionadamente a mujeres y ninos. Si he logrado mi objetivo, entonces este trabajo tambien representa una sintesis de las corrientes teoricas de la epoca. Como hacer que las escenas que intentaba capturar cobraran vida?
