Shakespeare and the Royal Actor argues that members of the royal family have identified with Shakespearean figures at various times in modern history to assert the continuity, legitimacy, and national identity of the royal line. It provides an account of the relationship between the Shakespearean afterlife and the royal family through the lens of a broadly conceived theatre history suggesting that these two hegemonic institutions had a mutually sustaining relationship from the accession of George III in 1760 to that of Elizabeth II in 1952. Identifications with Shakespearean figures have been deployed to assert the Englishness of a dynasty with strong familial links to Germany and to cultivate a sense of continuity from the more autocratic Plantagenet, Tudor, and Stuart monarchs informing Shakespeare's drama to the increasingly ceremonial monarchs of the modern period. The book is driven by new archival research in the Royal Collection and Royal Archives. It reads these archives critically, asking how different forms of royal and Shakespearean performance are remembered in the material holdings of royal institutions.

This unique collection of essays and images explores a series of objects in the Royal Collection as a means of assessing the interrelated histories of the British royal family and the Shakespearean afterlife across four centuries. Between the beginning of the eighteenth century and the late twentieth, Shakespeare became entrenched as the English national poet. Over the same period, the monarchy sought repeatedly to demonstrate its centrality to British nationhood. By way of close analysis of a selection of objects from the Royal Collection, this volume argues that the royal family and the Shakespearean afterlife were far more closely interwoven than has previously been realized. The chapters map the mutual development over time of the relationship between members of the British royal family and Shakespeare, demonstrating the extent to which each has gained sustained value from association with the other and showing how members of the royal family have individually and collectively constructed their identities and performed their roles by way of Shakespearean models. Each chapter is inspired by an object in (or formerly in) the Royal Collection and explores two interconnected questions: what has Shakespeare done for the royal family, and what has the royal family done for Shakespeare? The chapters range across the fields of art, theatre history, literary criticism, literary history, court studies and cultural history, showing how the shared history of Shakespeare and the royal family has been cultivated across media and across disciplines.

Still Shakespeare and the Photography of Performance examines the place of photography in the reception of the Shakespeare canon since the invention of the camera, looking at how photographic images have shaped perceptions of historicity, performance, and Shakespearean character, and how their dissemination has affected Shakespearean authority. Barnden reveals how photography has conditioned the reception of Shakespeare's works in two key ways. Firstly, as a form of performance documentation, photographs shape the way individual performances are remembered and their positioning in relation to traditional and iconoclastic interpretations of the text. Secondly, photographs are vehicles of Shakespearean iconography, encouraging certain compositions and interpretations. Exploring both theatrical and staged art photographs, Still Shakespeare demonstrates the role of photography as a contributor to the calcification of Shakespearean quotation, advertising, and iconography, and to the attrition of the relationship between image and text whereby images become attached to narratives far beyond their original context.

What are the qualities of a ‘Shakespearean actor’? Who has access to this identity? And can ‘Shakespearean’ ever be a meaningful descriptor for acting identities without reinforcing conservative cultural assumptions?An Alternative History of Shakespearean Acting provides a variety of perspectives from theatre history, disability studies, performance studies, critical race studies and global Shakespeares, among others, to address these core questions. The book confronts the overwhelmingly white, male, able-bodied and English-speaking emphases of many histories of Shakespearean acting, and asks how actors who do not fit into these identity categories might be recognised as ‘Shakespearean’. It offers a provocative alternative to biographical approaches to Shakespearean acting, arguing that such approaches have tended to obscure the systemic association of Shakespearean performance with cultural imperialism. Addressing the idea of the Shakespearean actor in the context of its long-lasting entanglement with British colonial histories, the volume foregrounds colonized, marginalized and disabled performers and the challenge they might present to imperialist Shakespeares.In four sections, the book offers different approaches to the study of Shakespearean acting, which expand the familiar list of famous names by considering dancers and amateurs as well as actors in traditionally neglected groups. The opening section explores the use of personal memory to fill lacunae in the archival record. This is followed by a set of chapters considering how intergenerational relationships might help to break down exclusionary practices. The third section addresses performers’ uses of their voices and bodies to reinforce or challenge stereotypes. A final section proposes new, more inclusive frameworks for the history of Shakespearean acting which look towards a more capacious definition of ‘Shakespearean actor’ for the future.
