Philanthropy plays an essential role in Muslim practice around the world. Using a new framing, Philanthropy in the Muslim World contributes to the literature by adding Muslim-majority countries that have not been previously included in cross-national philanthropy volumes as well as countries that have important Muslim minority communities. This book accomplishes five important tasks. First, it provides available research on different parts of the world where Muslims live and practice their faith and philanthropy. Second, it offers a cross-national understanding of philanthropy. Third, it illustrates the diversity and heterogeneity in philanthropic practice across different geographical contexts. It suggests that local culture, public policy, and regulations have an important role in defining local religious practice. Fourth, it helps us to understand how Muslims, in majority and minority contexts, seek to practice philanthropy after the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001 and the Global War on Terror. Fifth, it pushes back against the notion of a ‘Muslim’ and ‘non-Muslim’ world, as these terms have little basis in either critical scholarship or Qur’anic discourse. In the academic world, the book will be important to those interested in the sociology of Islam, scholars of civil society and philanthropy, scholars interested in global philanthropy or Islam in a global context, and students in courses on Islamic faith and practice. However, this book would also be valuable for the non-scholarly educated reader including philanthropists, international NGOs, policy-makers, and practitioners who seek to understand how Muslim philanthropy can play an important role in social good interventions in different parts of the world.

Using a community-based participatory research approach, Shariq A. Siddiqui, Abdul Samad, and Rafeel Wasif investigate the challenges and opportunities in collaborations between nonprofit organizations. With a focus on diverse minority communities, particularly under-resourced, racialized and stigmatized nonprofits and Muslim-led organizations, this book provides different approaches to connect them with the broader philanthropic community.Taking the Community Collaboration Initiative as a framework to achieve collective impact, the book examines the processes, circumstances, actors and resources necessary to implement and sustain long-term community co-operations. Chapters outline collaboration as a tool that nonprofit organizations can use to scale impact, improve financial stability, strengthen and diversify voices and leadership, and improve credibility and legitimacy. Ultimately, the book sets out a compelling case for the use of intrafaith collaborations across diverse communities to achieve their common missions, goals, and objectives. This forward-thinking book will be invaluable for students and scholars of philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, organization studies, and development. Its practical focus will also be of use to philanthropists, communities, and practitioners in nonprofit organizations seeking new and innovative ways of solving the problems they face.

This important book locates and defines contemporary Muslim philanthropy and philanthropic institutions within the rich and diverse history of Islamic practice. Shariq A. Siddiqui, Rafeel Wasif and Micah A. Hughes examine religious discourses on the topic and question the universality of our current definitions.Developing a more expansive understanding of Muslim philanthropy, this book provides a historical overview of Muslim philanthropic practice to examine why they carry out these activities - whether it be for the public good, personal gain, a just society, or the love of God. They consider what these actions tell us about Muslims’ understanding of their relationship with God and their fellow human beings, and whether there is a connection between these two relationships. Through a global range of case studies, chapters provide empirical data on Muslim giving in contemporary society, looking at the practices of zakat and sadaqa, contemporary waqfs, and how Muslim philanthropy is discussed through social media. Ultimately, the book encourages readers to think more critically about the relationship between religion and philanthropy.Comparative and interdisciplinary in scope, this book is vital for students and scholars of philanthropy, religion, social entrepreneurship, and the sociology of Islam. It is also a valuable resource for policymakers and philanthropists looking to better understand Islamic giving practices and their relationship to philanthropy.
