Der deutschsprachige Raum verfügt über eine volkssprachliche Predigtüberlieferung, wie sie sich vor der Reformation in keinem anderen europäischen Land findet. Die in ca. 10.000 Handschriften erhaltenen Predigten in deutscher Sprache sind als ein entscheidender Faktor für den Erfolg der Reformation im deutschsprachigen Raum anzusehen. Als einziges Massenmedium des Mittelalters prägte die Predigt den 'Mindset' von Ordensgemeinschaften, religiösen Gruppierungen und vor allem auch der städtischen Gesellschaften. Hans-Jochen Schiewer zeigt mit den hier versammelten Aufsätzen, wie die volkssprachliche Predigt des Mittelalters und ihre Überlieferung zur Analyse von Wirkmechanismen von Religiosität, Spiritualität und Frömmigkeit in der Wechselwirkung mit anderen sektoralen Bereichen der Gesellschaft und somit auch zum Verständnis von Vergangenheit und Gegenwart beitragen können.

Der Band versammelt Studien zu mittellateinischen, deutschen und englischen Texten, die Techniken und Strategien der Parodie in der Vormoderne beleuchten. Die Bandbreite der analysierten Beispiele reicht von den ›Carmina Burana‹ bis zur ›Aithiopika‹-Rezeption des 16. Jahrhunderts, umfasst geistliche Lyrik und Sangspruch ebenso wie mittelhochdeutsche Epik und bietet so Einblick in das weitgefächerte Spektrum parodistischer Sinnstiftung.

Der Band analysiert Strategien der Rezipientenbindung im deutschsprachigen Roman der Zeit vor 1600 im Übergang von der Handschrift zum Druck und vom Vers zur Prosa. Herausgearbeitet werden das Zusammenspiel von kognitiven und emotionalen Anreizen der Texte und ihre darauf aufbauende Wirkungspoetik. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die Vorgeschichte der Gattung Roman zu erhellen, die sich sowohl aus mittelalterlichen als auch aus antiken Quellen speist. Es erweist sich, dass die Romane des 14. bis 16. Jahrhunderts zentrale Elemente des neuzeitlichen theoretischen und praktischen Diskurses vorwegnehmen und dass die Gattung nicht einfach als »modernes« Phänomen verstanden werden darf – ihre Ursprünge liegen in vorbarocker Zeit. This volume analyses the strategies of the recipient links in German-language novels before 1600 during the transition from manuscript to print and from verse to prose. It elaborates upon the interplay between the cognitive and emotional incentives of the texts and their poetry of effect based thereupon. The aim of this work is to elucidate the prehistory of the ''novel'' genus, which stems from both medieval and from ancient sources. It was later revealed that novels between the 14th and 16th Century anticipate central elements of modern theoretical and practical discourse, and that this genus cannot merely be understood as a "modern" phenomenon – its origins lie in pre-Baroque times.
