An Australian republic is inevitable within the next generation. Winterton discusses the nature of republican government, why Australians might choose it, and compares the principal competing models - the executive presidency along French or American lines, the parliamentary republic of India, Ireland, Italy or West Germany. These models are compared with the present Australian government, a topic which includes a detailed review of the functions and powers, including the 'reserve powers', of the Crown. Consideration is also given to a future president's powers, in order to establish a concrete vision of the likely form of an Australian republican government.
