An updated edition of the parenting classic Have you ever thought: I cant believe I just said to my child the very thing my parents used to say to me! Am I destined to repeat the mistakes of my parents? In Parenting from the Inside Out, child psychiatrist Daniel J. Siegel and early-childhood expert Mary Hartzell explore how our childhood experiences shape the way we parent. Drawing on stunning new findings in neurobiology and attachment research, they explain how interpersonal relationships affect the development of the brain, and offer a step-by-step approach to forming a deeper understanding of our life stories, which will help us raise compassionate and resilient children. Combining Siegels cutting-edge neuroscience research with Hartzells 30 years of experience as a child-development specialist and parent educator, Parenting from the Inside Out guides us through creating the necessary foundations for secure and loving relationships with our children. This tenth-anniversary edition includes a new preface by the authors and incorporates the latest research from the field.

Daniel Siegel and Mary Hartzell have quite deftly managed to translate highly complex neuroscientific and psychological matters into lay strategies for effective parenting. This is truly a must-read book for all parents and those aspiring to become parents. -- Dr Marilyn B. Benoit, former president of American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry This book uniquely pairs the clinical experience of a psychiatrist with the deep wisdom of a nursery school teacher. Together Siegel and Hartzell delicately peel back the many layers of parenting to reveal the pure nature of the relationship at its core. -- Dr Neal Halfon, MPH, professor of pediatrics at UCLA, and editor of Child Rearing in America Parenting from the Inside Out is for anyone committed to a continued and deeper understanding of the human psyche and to looking beyond the presentational self to what is really motivating us. It is applicable to all of our interpersonal relationships, but most especially to our most treasured one: the one with our children. -- Michelle Pfeiffer Parenting from the Inside Out is a must-have for any parent. Mary Hartzell has helped me immeasurably in my quest to be the best possible parent I can be. -- Gwyneth Paltrow * Goop * This is an excellent book, with a positive, humane, and compassionate message. I applaud the emphasis on emotional connection and communication between parent and child and the thesis that as you understand and connect with yourself, you can better connect with your child. This book will be deeply interesting to parents as well as useful for them. -- Alan Sroufe, PhD, professor at Institute of Child Development, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, and author of Emotional Development Every parent should read Parenting from the Inside Out. -- Betty Edwards, author of Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain This book is beautifully written, filled with well-wrought science, but also with a deep and pervasive warmth. The subject is nothing less than human nature. What could be more important to all of us to understand who we are as we carry on the activity of loving our children. Anyone who reads this book will experience attachment, parenting, and human love differently from how they have before. -- Michael Gurian, author of The Wonder of Boys and The Soul of the Child By combining the latest research on parent-child relationships with new discoveries in brain science, Parenting from the Inside Out shows parents how to understand and integrate the experiences from their own childhood into a nurturing style of parenting that promotes healthy communication, meaningful attachment, and trust. -- Sal Severe, PhD, author of How to Behave So Your Children Will Too! Daniel Siegel and Mary Hartzell's illuminating and inspiring book presents a practical model of parenting that nurtures an emphatic dialogue within oneself and with one's children. Consequently, parenting becomes not just something that we do, but something that is very much a part of who we are. As a parent of seven children, this book has a permanent spot on my night table. -- Kate Capshaw Spielberg
