Focusing particularly on central and eastern Europe, the contributors examine the economic management activities of state agencies in the move from command to market economies and the attempted creation of viable firms for such economies. They also explore various aspects of the restructuring of work systems, including the building of new forms of labour relations in post-socialist Europe. The role of foreign capital and multinationals in shaping host government industrial strategies is addressed, and the ways in which relatively successful industrial regimes can suffer from a lack of flexibility in the face of outside forces are also discussed.

Seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre ist weltweit das Aufkommen neuartiger netzformiger Arrangements von Organisationen und okonomischen Kooperationsbeziehungen in Industrie und Wirtschaft zu beobachten. Beruhmte Beispiele sind die Industriedistrikte des "Dritten Italien", die "Cite Scientifique" in der Pariser Region und das "Silicon Valley" in Kalifornien. Der Wissenschaft gelang es jedoch bisher kaum, den Prozess der Entstehung und Entwicklung derartiger Netzwerkstrukturen umfassend zu dokumentieren und deren generative Prinzipien zu erklaren. Der historische Umbruch der Wirtschaftsstrukturen in Ostdeutschland eroffnete hierfur der sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung eine einmalige Chance. In der vorliegenden Studie werden Aufbau und Genese von drei regionalen industriellen Netzwerken in unterschiedlichen okonomischen Sektoren untersucht: die optoelektronische High-Tech-Industrie in Jena, die flexible Massenproduktion von Autos in Zwickau und der fordistisch gepragte Schienenfahrzeugbau in Sachsen-Anhalt.Die Ergebnisse sind nicht nur ein empirischer und theoretischer Beitrag zum wirtschafts- und industriesoziologischen Fachdiskurs, sondern auch zur - oft kontroversen - gesellschaflichen Debatte um Industriepolitik, Raumplanung und gewerkschaftliche Strategien. Die Fallstudien verdeutlichen, wie Neue Industriestruktur-Konzepte zu uberraschenden okonomischen Aufwartsspiralen fuhren konnen.
