Der Sammelband beschäftigt sich mit der Anwendung kulturwissenschaftlicher Ansätze im zentral- und südosteuropäischen Kontext. Zu Wort kommen Forscherinnen und Forscher, die sich mit einschlägigen Fragen im Bereich von Kulturanalyse und Kulturwissenschaft beschäftigen. Die film- und literaturwissenschaftlichen Aufsätze verbindet die Bezugnahme auf historische Ereignisse sowie deren kulturellen Hintergrund, den wir ansonsten nur auf der Ebene des Politischen wahrnehmen. Mit Blick auf konkrete Beispiele werden dabei methodische und theoretische Fragen zu Alterität, Raum, Gedächtnis & Erinnerung sowie Identität thematisiert und entfaltet.

Im Zentrum der vorliegenden Studie stehen die Repräsentationen des kriegerischen Zerfalls Jugoslawiens in der deutschsprachigen erzählenden Literatur unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Dynamik von Selbst- und Fremdbildlichkeit. Welche Rolle spielen jene hegemonialen Formatierungen narrativer und diskursiver Art, die Maria Todorova als ,Balkanismus'' beschrieben hat, in den Texten von Peter Handke, Juli Zeh, Norbert Gstrein, Sasa Stanisic und Anna Kim? Und wie kann die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem vermeintlich ,Anderen'' erfolgen, ohne bestimmte binäre, auf kultureller Asymmetrie beruhende Ordnungen fortzuschreiben? Um Antworten auf diese Fragen zu finden, verbindet die Autorin unterschiedliche literatur- und kulturwissenschaftliche Zugänge und widmet den gesellschaftspolitischen und diskursiven Kontexten in Österreich und Deutschland in den 1990er Jahren besonderes Augenmerk.

Die komplexen kulturellen und literarischen Wechselbeziehungen im zentraleuropäischen Raum vor der Folie des kulturellen Gedächtnisses der Habsburger Monarchie stehen im Zentrum dieses Buches. Unter Rückgriff auf Ansätze aus den Kulturwissenschaften, den Postcolonial Studies sowie der Imperiumsforschung kommt darin ein Verständnis von Literatur zum Ausdruck, das den literarischen Text als eine Verschränkung von symbolischen und sozialen Systemen analysiert. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei Phänomenen der (imaginären) Grenzziehungen und Grenzüberschreitungen, der Konstruktion, Transformation und Überschneidung von kulturell produzierten Räumen und Identitäten und der konstruierenden Opposition von Zentrum und Peripherie. Auch imagologische, an den Prozess des "nation building" angelehnte Fragestellungen werden berührt.

Sigmund Freuds Dora-Fallgeschichte stellt einen Schlüsseltext in seinem Werk dar. Er gehört zu den theoretisch und literarisch wichtigsten und interessantesten Texten Freuds. Angesiedelt an der Schnittstelle von Hysterie-Studien, Sexualtheorie und Traumdeutung, ist die darin unternommene Auseinandersetzung mit Übertragung und Trauma bahnbrechend. Dieser Band präsentiert die Originalfassung des Textes, wie er im Jahr 1905 veröffentlicht wurde. Der ausführliche Kommentar legt sein Augenmerk einerseits auf theoretische Fragen wie Freuds Ansichten über infantile Sexualität und Trauma. Andererseits wird die Fallgeschichte einer narratologischen Untersuchung unterzogen. Die von Freud in der Dora-Studie aufgeworfenen Fragen sind für heutige Forscher*innen in den Bereichen Psychoanalyse, Sexualität, Gender, Philosophische Anthropologie und Literaturwissenschaft noch immer von großer Relevanz.Sigmund Freud''s case study of Dora is a key text in his oeuvre. Die Kritik an der Ökonomisierung und Quantifizierung aller Wissenschaftsbereiche im Zuge eines ''neoliberal turn'' ist mehr als berechtigt. Die Klage über jene Ökonomie- und Zweckorientierung verbindet sich allerdings meist mit der Setzung eines diffus überfrachteten Idealbilds. Diese Betrachtungsweise erweckt den Eindruck, es gäbe eine homogene, von ökonomischer Unterjochung bedrohte ''Schicksalsgemeinschaft'' aller Wissenschaftler*innen. Der Blick auf die Herrschaftspraktiken und Machtasymmetrien innerhalb des universitären Systems bleibt jedoch verstellt. Verdeckt bleibt überdies die Tatsache, dass die finanzielle Prekarisierung ganz besonders diejenigen betrifft, denen auch die Teilhabe an institutioneller und epistemischer Macht verwehrt ist.In Ambivalenzraum Universität übernimmt deshalb ein Oppositionspaar Leitcharakter: Freiheit vs. Herrschaft. In Auseinandersetzung mit dieser heuristischen Dichotomie entsteht ein Bild von Universität und Wissenschaft, das sich von rein ökonomisch orientierten kritischen Diskursen deutlich unterscheidet.
