'Humanism' is among the most powerful terms in historical and contemporary political, religious, and philosophical debates. The term serves to position itself in ideological conflicts and to cement a claim to interpretation, but is highly contradictory. This Element addresses 'humanism' in its striking contradictions. Contemporary definitions are confronted with the historical contexts the term 'humanism' is applied to. Based on Niethammer's invention of 'humanism' as an anti-enlightenment pedagogical concept (1808), the book does not present a mere conceptual history, but rather a theoretically oriented discourse, an examination of the front positions, between which humanism has been constructed. In this way, its 'impossibility' is shown, which is rooted in its strict contextuality. Secondly, historiographical alternatives to this dilemma are pointed out, in order to finally give suggestions not only for an ethical-normative work of the historian of humanism, but for dealing with 'humanism' in general, in connection with discourse-theoretical suggestions. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.

When the University of Halle-Wittenberg founded the Interdisciplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies in 1993, it was following the destiny of its history as a centre of the early Enlightenment in Germany which affected the whole of Europe. Research foci of the Centre are at the moment aesthetics, discourses of history, cultures of learning and erudition, university history and not least the wide field of early Enlightenment as a field of experimentation and the foundation of cultural models for the Modern Age. The results of this research have been published since Autumn 1995 in the Centres’ research publications series entitled University of Halle Series on the European Enlightenment. In addition, there have been relevant works produced outside the Centre. Two to four volumes are published annually (monographs, collected volumes, commentaries on sources).

Lavater's diverse interests, which were not measured solely by reading, but were vitalizing through personal, often controversial contacts, make him a dazzling central figure of the 18th century. In accordance with his dictum of the face of God in the face of man, this 18th century is reflected in Lavater's complex physiognomy of work with its simultaneities of the non-simultaneous, with its straight-line and crooked progressions, its controversies and conflicts. The volume creates interdisciplinary approaches from German literary studies, Latin studies, Russian studies, medical and psychological history, art history, esoteric history, religious studies, theologies of several denominations, musicology, philosophy and early modern history. It offers access oriented towards cultural studies and the history of discourse. This is appropriate to the subject of interest, as Lavater is an author who, on the one hand, has established a theology, if you will, that is based on cultural studies and, on the other hand, has an interdisciplinary scope.
