Bindings have been an essential – and often beautiful – component of books since the codex form was invented 2,000 years ago. They make books work, but they also provide an opportunity for binders to display their skills. In the early seventeenth century there was eager interest, among the leisured classes, in fruits from the Mediterranean and beyond, not least for the kitchen gardens and orchards of England’s grand houses. The volume of charming, vibrant, almost primitif watercolour paintings of orchard fruits on the branch, popularly known as ‘Tradescants’ Orchard’, is a precious and fragile relic of this era of broadening horticultural horizons. This manuscript, traditionally associated with the renowned plantsmen, the John Tradescants, was among the eclectic collections of Elias Ashmole (1617-1692), which came to form the basis of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Then, in 1860 it was transferred to the Bodleian Library. It has been quietly recognized as a mysterious treasure, yet the paintings raise many unanswered questions. Who painted them, and for whom? What was their purpose? Only one apple is represented – were there once others, now missing? Whose handwriting appears in the manuscript? Why did the artist paint wildlife such as birds, frogs and butterflies on many of the folios? All sixty-six of the original illustrations are reproduced here in facsimile for the first time, following a general introduction which maps out the mystery of why and how these beguiling watercolours came to be commissioned and made.

The late thirteenth-century manuscript, Oxford, Bodleian Library Digby 86, contains a personal anthology of nearly 100 texts in French, English and Latin, including secular literature, devotional material, and texts with practical applications, ranging from medical care for humans and birds to games and party tricks. Many of the texts are unique to this manuscript. It contains 18 English texts, including lyrics, the earliest English Fabliau (Dame Sirith), and the beast-epic, `The Fox and the Wolf'. The manuscript, which was assembled by a layman associated with Redmarley d'Abitot (Gloucestershire), provides and important witness to the context in which these texts were preserved and read.

The Chandra Shum Shere Collection, which arrived in Oxford from Varanasi over a century ago, is one of the largest Indian manuscript libraries in the world outside the Subcontinent. Part IV of this descriptive catalogue adds much to our knowledge of the collection as a whole and gives details of nearly 900 manuscripts in the field of Vedic literature, a fine and varied corpus of Sanskrit primary texts and commentaries. There are some indications that the original owner of this collection was a ritualist with interests both in sacrificial practice and in traditional Vedic scholarship. This element of the collection brings the published catalogue records near to the half-way point, and other subject volumes are present in preparation. Catalogue entries give full information of the coverage of the nature and extent of the texts, materials, scripts, scribes, dates and places of writing, and former owners of the manuscripts.

In 1930 the Clarendon Press published a Catalogue of the Persian, Turkish, Hindustani, and Pushtu MSS in the Bodleian Library. Part 2 of this catalogue included all Turkish MSS acquired before 1900, compiled by H. Ethé (out of print since 1958). A supplementary catalogue has now been compiled by Professor Günay Kut, Kemal Ataturk Visiting Fellow in the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford 1989-90, which contains all Turkish MSS acquired by the Bodleian Library since 1900. Both the supplementary catalogue (approximately 356 entries) and a reprint of the original catalogue (approximately 280 entries) are issued as one volume, with an introduction by Professor Kut, an explanation of the numbering to be used, and a romanization table. The volume will contain fully cross-referenced name and title indexes covering Ethé as well as the supplementary catalogue. The entries are classified under subjects such as the Koran, Sufism, Islamic history and legend, jurisprudence, history, biography, medicine, botany, geography, divans and mesnevis, encyclopedias, dictionaries and grammars: the catalogue throws light on almost all scholarly aspects of the Turkish world.

The Arabic manuscript collection now in the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford includes some the oldest and most important scientific and medical medieval manuscripts preserved today. Emilie Savage-Smith describes 377 medical manuscripts representing 242 different treatises. The illustrated catalogue begins with early translations of medical material into Arabic, including a rare illustrated copy made in Baghdad in 1242 of a Greek treatise on medicinal substances. Thereafter, the organisation is by topic, with the entries arranged chronologically within that heading. These include Arabic medical treatises written as early as the ninth century and as recently as the seventeenth century, and in localities as far apart as Spain and Central Asia. Eight concordances and indexes provide guides to the manuscripts through titles, authors, copyists, dates of copies, owners and donors, and shelfmarks, as well as authorities cited and miscellaneous material. The concordances also provide a short guide to the 215 non-medical items that are part of the volumes comprising the medical portion of the Bodleian collection.

This volume makes available, in a facsimile edition, one of the most important musical manuscripts of the late Middle Ages. Copied probably in Venice around 1430, the Oxford manuscript contains the most comprehensive surviving collection of secular songs of the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Of the 326 pieces, 216 are not found in any other source. Including works by Guillaume Dufay, Binchois and nearly all other leading composers of their generation, it is central to an understanding of 15th-century song traditions. Because of the copyist's clear and distinctive hand, it is also significant for studies of late medieval musical notation. David Fallows's introduction includes a history of the manuscript, analysis of its preparation and survey of its choice of repertory, as well as a full inventory of the music and alphabetical indexes by title and composer. The original-size facsimile includes beta-radiographs of all watermarks, as well as ultraviolet photos that show the copyist's changes and revisions.This volume is the first edition in a new series called "Late Medieval and Early Renaissance Music in Facsimile", edited by Margaret Bent and John Nadas and published by the University of Chicago Press. This series will include high-quality reproductions of some of the most important and frequently studied European music manuscripts of the late 13th to early 15th centuries. During the twentieth and twenty-first centuries the Bodleian Library has continued to expand its holdings of Ethiopic manuscripts through new acquisitions. Especially noteworthy are the forty-five manuscripts that the former Oxford University Medical Officer Bent Juel-Jensen bequeathed to the library at his death in 2007.
