This volume advances our understanding of early Christianity as a lived religion by approaching it through its rites, the emotions and affects surrounding those rites, and the material setting for the practice of them. The connections between emotions and ritual, between rites and their materiality, and between emotions and their physical manifestation in ancient Mediterranean culture have been inadequately explored as yet, especially with regard to early Christianity and its water and dining rites. Readers will find all three areas—ritual, emotion, and materiality—engaged in this exemplary interdisciplinary study, which provides fresh insights into early Christianity and its world.Ritual, Emotion, and Materiality in the Early Christian World will be of special interest to interdisciplinary-minded researchers, seminarians, and students who are attentive to theory and method, and those with an interest in the New Testament and earliest Christianity. It will also appeal to those working on ancient Jewish and Greco-Roman religion, emotion, and ritual from a comparative standpoint.

This volume investigates the central role of physical bodies, ritual technologies, healing practices, gender constructions, and visual imagery in creating and sustaining religious meaning in antiquity.Religious life in the ancient world was profoundly shaped by the interplay of materiality, ritual, embodiment, and visuality. Far from being purely intellectual or doctrinal, religious practices across Greco-Roman and early Christian contexts were enacted through tangible, sensory, and embodied experiences that engaged worshippers physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Drawing from a rich array of primary sources and theoretical frameworks, especially gender studies and ritual studies, the chapters collectively emphasize that religion in this period was fundamentally experienced through ritualized actions, embodied transformations, and visually charged sacred spaces. With its focus on ritual, gender, and the body, the book offers readers a fresh approach to ancient Christianity and the Greco-Roman world in which it emerged. This interdisciplinary volume is suitable for students and scholars working on the New Testament and early Christianity and issues of ritual, gender, and the body in the early Christian world.

This book focuses on the element of thresholds – makeshift gates, makeshift structures and house doors – as concepts of liminality in ancient Near Eastern magical rituals, and the idea of transformation they reflect.Readers gain an in-depth understanding of theories of liminality and rites of passage, and how they illuminate fascinating aspects of social behavior and religious and cultic practices in ancient Near Eastern societies, specifically those of Hatti and Mesopotamia. Ritual liminality, manifested in the use of makeshift and permanent architectural elements, was meant to facilitate two different aims: transformation from one category to the other (using makeshift gates and structures) and separation between categories (using house doors). The book presents the pertinent ritual texts in their original languages, analyzes these texts in detail and offers comparative discussions of the different cultures that practiced these rituals.Magical Passages in Ancient Near Eastern Rituals is suitable for students and scholars interested in ancient religions, rituals and cults, particularly in the ancient Near East, as well as those working on ancient history, philology, anthropology and religious studies more broadly.
Stones, Trees and Springs in the Ritual Landscape of Late Antique Gaul and Hispania

This book explores how late antique condemnations of rituals at stones, trees and springs reveal deliberate ecclesiastical strategies designed to control devotion, redefine sacred landscapes and consolidate episcopal control across the rural territories of post-Roman Gaul and Hispania.By analysing sermons, conciliar canons, penitentials, hagiography and civil legislation, the book shows how accusations of idolatry in natural spaces functioned as rhetorical tools to regulate ritual plurality and impose orthodoxy in Gaul and Hispania in the 6th to 8th centuries. Engaging with ongoing historiographical debates on the persistence of non-Christian practices in rural areas during Late Antiquity, it challenges the conventional view that such rituals were merely residual traces of pre-Roman or Roman belief systems. Combining historical, textual and anthropological approaches, it reframes so-called ‘rural paganism’ as a discursive construction and proposes novel insights into the intersection of ritual practices, ecclesiastical authority and the role of natural features in the construction of religious landscapes.Intended for scholars and students of religion in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages and of the history of early Christianity, this book also appeals to readers interested in cultural landscapes and the transformation of religious practices in the post-Roman West.
