Judaism and Emotion breaks with stereotypes that, until recently, branded Judaism as a rigid religion of laws and prohibitions. Instead, authors from different fields of research discuss the subject of Judaism and emotion from various scholarly perspectives; they present an understanding of Judaism that does not exclude spirituality and emotions from Jewish thought. In doing so, the contributions account for the relation between the representation of emotion and the actual emotions that living and breathing human beings feel in their everyday lives. While scholars of rabbinic studies and theology take a historical-critical and socio-historical approach to the subject, musicologists and scholars of religious studies focus on the overall research question of how the literary representations of emotion in Judaism are related to ritual and musical performances within Jewish worship. They describe in a more holistic fashion how Judaism serves to integrate various aspects of social life. In doing so, they examine the dynamic interrelationship between Judaism, cognition, and culture.

Hostility towards Jews is expressed in very different ways. In recent decades, a shift from anti-Judaic to anti-Israeli discourse can be observed, which is alarmingly widely accepted in society and not infrequently rooted in an anti-Semitic interpretation of the New Testament texts. For many years, Ekkehard W. Stegemann and Wolfgang Stegemann have been drawing attention to hostility towards Jews and its interpretation patterns, which are constantly changing. Aspects of anti-Judaism in the New Testament, hostility to Jews in early Christianity, and also the relationship between the Church and Israel as a Christian identity problem, are among the topics they have been addressing for over 30 years.

Der vorliegende Band widmet sich den Gleichnissen und Parabeln in der Literaturgeschichte des frühen Christentums. Der bisherige Forschungsdiskurs, der sich vorwiegend auf die Gleichnisverkündigung Jesu konzentrierte, wird darin in mehrfacher Hinsicht erweitert. In einem einführenden Teil werden parabolische Gattungen in der frühjüdischen und der griechisch-römischen Literatur als Entstehungskontext der frühchristlichen Schriften beleuchtet. Anschließend werden Texte in den Blick genommen, in denen Gleichnisse und verwandte bildhafte Redeformen als Jesusüberlieferung präsentiert werden (etwa in den Evangelien) oder in anderer Weise eine zentrale Rolle für die literarische Konzeption einer Schrift spielen, wie etwa im Hirt des Hermas. Weitere Beiträge wenden sich der frühen Rezeption der Gleichnisverkündigung Jesu bei christlichen Autoren des 2. und 3. Jahrhunderts zu.
