This frugal novel from the Finnish Vartio (1924–1966), is set in a Finnish village (near Viipuri) during the early 20th century. The mentally unstable title character, Adele, argues with her maid, Alma, about the fire that consumed the parsonage, and soon moves on to other topics. An obsession with a set of stuffed birds—passed down from the parson's uncle to the parson, to his wife and, finally, to Alma's care—serves as a major focus, with ample space devoted to addiction, sexual violence, the color of Alma's scarf on the day the Alma and Adele first met and Adele's criticism of Alma for her treatment of the birds. That last inspires Alma to tell a face-saving lie: that a rare, stuffed swan resides in her family home. The tale feeds Adele's mad obsession and leads to a shocking final conflict between the parson's widow and her maid. With a masterful judiciousness of detail, Vartio manages to make the slight scenario take on a great deal of weight. The perpetual conflict is as affecting as it is absurd.

Suicide is a puzzling phenomenon. Not only is its demarcation problematic but it also eludes simple explanation. The cultures in which suicide mortality is high do not necessarily have much else in common, and neither is a single mental illness such as depression sufficient to lead a person to suicide. In a word, despite its statistical regularity, suicide is unpredictable on the individual level. The main argument emerging from this collection is that suicide should not be understood as a separate realm of pathological behavior but as a form of human action. As such it is always dependent on the decision that the individual makes in a cultural, ethical and socio-economic context, but the context never completely determines the decision. This book also argues that cultural narratives concerning suicide have a problematic double function: in addition to enabling the community to make sense of self-inflicted death, they also constitute a blueprint depicting suicide as a solution to common human problems.

The book does not dwell on the science of emissions reduction, as this is well covered elsewhere; rather, it focuses on the design and practical implementation of mitigation activities through changing farming systems. Climate Change Mitigation and Agriculture includes chapters about experiences in developed countries, such as Canada and Australia, where these efforts also have lessons for mitigation options for smallholders in poorer nations, as well as industrialising countries such as Brazil and China. The anthology Perspectives on Women´s Everyday Religion approaches women´s religious lives from a multidisciplinary perspective in order to paint as multifaceted a picture of this religious field as possible. The authors represent History of Religions, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Ethnology, Theology and Intellectual History. First part of the book describes negotiations on the extent of women´s calling in the nineteenth and twentieth century Sweden. Part two discusses women´s religious practices and the gendering of religious spaces in Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic contexts and Part three deals with these issues in some Muslim settings. Although the articles are centred on women´s religious ideas and practices, most of the authors study these topics within a wider framework of gender relations. Besides gender, the papers also acknowledge the significance of other variables, such as class, marital status, setting (urban/rural) for women´s negotiations on gender, religion and space.
