The volume results from a seminar sponsored by the ’Foundation for Intellectual History’ at the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenbüttel, in 1992. Starting with the theory of regressus as displayed in its most developed form by William Wallace, these papers enter the vast field of the Renaissance discussion on method as such in its historical and systematical context. This is confined neither to the notion of method in the strict sense, nor to the Renaissance in its exact historical limits, nor yet to the Aristotelian tradition as a well defined philosophical school, but requires a new scholarly approach. Thus - besides Galileo, Zabarella and their circles, which are regarded as being crucial for the ’emergence of modern science’ in the end of the 16th century - the contributors deal with the ancient and medieval origins as well as with the early modern continuity of the Renaissance concepts of method and with ’non-regressive’ methodologies in the various approaches of Renaissance natural philosophy, including the Lutheran and Calvinist traditions.

Der Band behandelt eine im 15. Jahrhundert an der Wiener Universität entstandene Auslegung zum weitverbreiteten Tractatus de latitudinibus formarum. Diese Formlatitudenlehre sucht die Vielfalt der intensiven Variationen der Qualitäten in den Griff zu bekommen. Der anonyme Autor des hier edierten und erläuterten Kommentars geht auf die epistemologische Frage nach dem Status der daraus neu entstandenen Formlatitudenlehre als Wissenschaft ein, diskutiert den berühmten Satz der mittleren Geschwindigkeit, verschiedene naturphilosophische Sophismata und die systematische Einteilung der anzuwendenden geometrischen Darstellungen. Eine mit solchen Diagrammen versehene Abschrift des Kommentars, die der Edition zugrunde liegt, stammt von Michael Lochmair (gest. 1499), der an der Universität Wien lehrte.

Aristotelian philosophy is generally regarded as incompatible with the mathematical methods and principles that form the basis of modern science. This book offers an entirely new perspective on this presumed incompatibility. It surveys the tradition of the Oxford Calculators from its beginnings in the fourteenth century until Leibniz and the philosophy of the seventeenth century and explores how the Calculators' techniques of quantification expanded the conceptual and methodological limits of Aristotelianism. In the process, it examines a large number of authors, some of them never studied in this context. Exploring the relationship between various late medieval disciplines, the book sheds new light on the problem of continuity vs. discontinuity between scholasticism and modern science. Beyond its historiographical purpose, this book also hopes to be a source of inspiration for present-day philosophers of science.
