Sydney Selvon is Editor-in Chief of Le Mauriticien, one of the most influential daily newspapers of Mauritius. He also writes history and belongs to a new generation which is assessing the country's past with new eyes, now that Mauritius has been an independent nation for 23 years and can look back with more perspective on its rich and interesting experience. He won the Prix Nicolas Lambert, the most coveted national journalism award, in 1979 and has authored or co-authored five books on the history and culture of his country. He supported the independance of his country as a journalist at L'Express in 1968 and has been a close observer of the country's constitutional and legal evolution ever since. Today, his editorials often make news and stir reaction nationwide.
