Contemporary theory of international politics faces a twofold problem: the critical engagement with legacies of national power politics in connection to 20th Century International Relations and the regeneration of notions of humanity. This book contributes to this engagement by a genealogy of thoughts on war, peace, and ethics.

This book develops a notion of differences and 'otherness' beyond hegemonic and hierarchical thinking as represented by the legacies of Western philosophical and political thought.In doing so, it relates to the phenomenological discourse of the twentieth century, especially to Georg Simmel, Alfred Schütz, Emmanual Lévinas, and Jacques Derrida, and drafts our understanding of difference as a genuine human experience of a social and political world that is in motion and transformative, rather than static and predictable. On this basis of temporalized ontology and its normative consequences, differences are drafted as a positive social and political force and as powerful capacities of transformation and change. In practical terms, this understanding is most important for our theorizing and acting upon peace, peace-building, and conflict solution. Differences now appear not as obstacle to peace and reconciliation, but as lively and constructive articulations of 'otherness' and as a positive power of transformation, emancipation, and change.This book will be of interest to students of international relations, philosophy and political theory.

These narratives are formed transculturally, forcing people to re-consider, re-negotiate, and re-evaluate their thoughts about community and belonging over time and often leading to changes and ruptures.

Multikulturalitat ist in vielen westlichen und nichtwestlichen Gesellschaften mittlerweile bestandteil alltaglicher erfahrung geworden. Deshalb stellt sich dringend die Frage, wie der Zusammenhang von Demokratie und Multikulturalitat heute gedacht werden muss und welche neuen Herausforderungen von den demokratischen Institutionen bewaltigt werden mussen. Wieviel Pluralitat und Differenz ist in einer Demokratie moglich? Um diese Kernfrage drehen sich die Beitrage dieses Buches. Dabei werden einerseits die theoretischen Voraussetzungen des traditionellen politikwissenschaftlichen Institutionen- und Demokratiebegriffs hinterfragt und mit der Tatsache der Multikulturalitat konfrontiert. Andererseits werden empirisch sowohl etablierte westliche Demokratien als auch die Transformationsgesellschaften daraufhin analysiert, wie sie institutionell die ethnischen und kulturellen Differenzen innerhalb ihrer Grenzen bewaltigen.

Fur die Beschreibung des Verhaltnisses von Politik und Religion und des Weges der westlichen Gesellschaften in die Moderne bleibt der Begriff der Sakularisierung unverzichtbar. Einer einseitigen Sakularisierungsthese kann aber sowohl empirisch als auch theoretisch widersprochen werden. Die Autoren dieses Bandes beleuchten deshalb aus ideen- und begriffsgeschichtlicher Perspektive die ambivalente Beziehung von Politik und Religion. Es zeigt sich, dass die Geschichte der westlichen Moderne nicht als linear-fortschreitender Prozess der Sakularisierung beschrieben werden kann: Sakularisierung wird von vielfaltigen und auch widerspruchlichen Tendenzen der Resakralisierung begleitet.

Die Vielfalt der empirisch nachweisbaren Beziehungen zwischen Politik und Religion lässt sich nicht einmal in "westlichen" Gesellschaften auf einen einfachen Nenner bringen. Der "Säkularisierung" stehen hier, wie die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes zeigen, deutliche Tendenzen einer Revitalisierung und Re-Politisierung von Religion gegenüber. Die Autoren untersuchen die unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen des Verhältnisses von Politik und Religion und seine vielfältigen, teilweise gegenläufigen Entwicklungen. Sie reflektieren diese anhand spezifischer empirischer Fragestellungen zur Verfassungsordnung und politischen Kultur ausgewählter Länder, fragen nach dem Einfluss religiöser Orientierungen auf einzelne Politikfelder und analysieren Kirchen und Religionsgemeinschaften als politische Akteure auf der nationalen wie der internationalen Ebene.

Die Studie fragt nach der Zukunft des von der Staatenwelt ausgehenden, raumlich-territorialen politischen Ordnungsdenkens. Dabei wird der Funktionsverlust des nationalstaatlichen Raum- und Territorialitatsbegriffes im Kontext globaler Politik konstatiert und konzeptionell herausgearbeitet. Fur die Internationalen Beziehungen bedeutet dies eine Zusammenfuhrung von postmodernen und traditionalistischen Ansatzen zu einem eigenstandigen Konzept fur die Analyse globaler Politik.

Wie christlich ist Europa? Wie religiös sind europäische Gesellschaften? Oder gibt es bereits eine europäische Gesellschaft? Und wenn ja, worauf baut sie auf? Glauben wir dem in die Krise geratenen europäischen Verfassungsentwurf, so ist die Europäische Union eine religiös neutrale, wirtschaftliche und politische Gemeinschaft. Verfolgen wir hingegen Europadiskurse in europäischen Gesellschaften von Seiten führender EU-Politiker wie auch von Seiten wissenschaftlicher Diskutanten, so finden wir allerorts Debatten um die, oder eine europäische Werteidentität und ihre religiöse Basis. All das ist genug Stoff, systematisch nach dem Verhältnis von Politik und Religion im europäischen Kontext zu fragen. Da das ordnungspolitisch-institutionelle wie geistige Verhältnis von Politik und Religion in europäischen Staaten, wie andere Politikfelder auch, von Europäisierungsprozessen betroffen sind, stehen ihre Ausgestaltungen in dem Zwiespalt zwischen nationalen Traditionen und religiöser Vielfalt. Unter diesem Topos suchen die Autoren dieses Bandes aus unterschiedlichen empirischen und theoretischen Perspektiven nach Antworten.
