Den svenska 1800-talslitteraturen innehåller en mängd beskrivningar av människor som växlar, överskrider och utmanar kön. Där finns kvinnor som har varit män, män som har varit kvinnor, androgyner som varken är män eller kvinnor och andra som är både män och kvinnor, samtidigt eller om vartannat. Ändå har det inte pratats så mycket om translitteratur och ingen har skrivit någon svensk translitteraturhistoria. Förrän nu. I doktorsavhandlingen "Transformationer" analyseras bland annat stortjuven Lasse-Majas självbiografi, C.J.L. Almqvists klassiker "Drottningens juvelsmycke" och spänningsförfattaren Aurora Ljungstedts "Moderna typer". Det är en bred sammanställning av translitterära traditioner, men också en diskussion om läsningens möjligheter. "Transformationer" beskriver transmotiv under århundradet innan "trans" blev ett begrepp, en diagnos och en identitet. Det vi i dag kallar transidentiteter och -uttryck är sentida begrepp, som uppstod först under 1900-talet. Men långt innan dess har det funnits personer som överskridit könsgränser. Historien är full av människor som vi i dag skulle kalla transpersoner. Och skönlitteraturen är full av porträtt av dem. Hur skildras könsöverskridanden i äldre skönlitteratur? Hur kan vi läsa sådana texter idag? Och vad om något har 1800-talslitteraturen att göra med dagens transidentiteter? One particularly troubling and complicated aspect is how the child victim forms (and maintains) a “traumatic bond” with his abuser, even becoming protective and defensive of that person despite the pain and suffering they have caused. This book was planned originally not as a work to be published, but as an excuse to buy a computer, incidentally to give me a chance to organize my own ideas ~n what measure theory every would-be analyst should learn, and to detail my approach to the subject. When it turned out that Springer-Verlag thought that the point of view in the book had general interest and offered to publish it, I was forced to try to write more clearly and search for errors. The search was productive. Readers will observe the stress on the following points. The application of pseudometric spaces. Pseudo metric, rather than metric spaces, are applied to obviate the artificial replacement of functions by equivalence classes, a replacement that makes the use of "almost everywhere" either improper or artificial. The words "function" and "the set on which a function has values at least E" can be taken literally in this book. Pseudometric space properties are applied in many contexts. For example, outer measures are used to pseudometrize classes of sets and the extension of a finite measure from an algebra to a 0" algebra is thereby reduced to finding the closure of a subset of a pseudo metric space.

Thermally Activated Mechanisms in Crystal Plasticity is a unified, quantitative and fundamental resource for material scientists investigating the strength of metallic materials of various structures at extreme temperatures. Crystal plasticity is usually controlled by a limited number of elementary dislocation mechanisms, even in complex structures. Those which determine dislocation mobility and how it changes under the influence of stress and temperature are of key importance for understanding and predicting the strength of materials. The authors describe in a consistent way a variety of thermally activated microscopic mechanisms of dislocation mobility in a range of crystals. The principles of the mechanisms and equations of dislocation motion are revisited and new ones are proposed. These describe mostly friction forces on dislocations such as the lattice resistance to glide or those due to sessile cores, as well as dislocation cross-slip and climb. They are critically assessed by comparison with the best available experimental results of microstructural characterization, in situ straining experiments under an electron or a synchrotron beam, as well as accurate transient mechanical tests such as stress relaxation experiments. Some recent attempts at atomistic modeling of dislocation cores under stress and temperature are also considered since they offer a complementary description of core transformations and associated energy barriers.

In addition to offering guidance and assistance for further experimentation, the book indicates new ways to extend the body of data in particular areas such as lattice resistance to glide.

This publication contains 16 papers mainly dealing with the concepts of introducing space science education at various academic levels. The meeting was addressed by Prof. G. Haerendel, President, COSPAR and the keynote address delivered by Prof. Sir Hermann Bondi of Churchill College, Cambridge. The Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) is one of the largest-scale research collaborations in global health, distilling a wide range of health information to provide estimates and projections for more than 350 diseases, injuries, and risk factors in 195 countries. Its results are a critical tool informing researchers, policy-makers, and others working to promote health around the globe. A study like the GBD is, of course, extremely complex from an empirical perspective. But it also raises a large number of complex ethical and philosophical questions that have been explored in a series of collaborations over the past twenty years among epidemiologists, philosophers, economists, and policy scholars. The essays in this volume address issues of current and urgent concern to the GBD and other epidemiological studies, including rival understandings of causation, the aggregation of complex health data, temporal discounting, age-weighting, and the valuation of health states. The notion of truth has become much discussed in philosophy over the last few decade, with many senior figures grappling with the relativist and constructivist notions of truth popular in other parts of the academy.
