This publication contains 16 papers mainly dealing with the concepts of introducing space science education at various academic levels. The meeting was addressed by Prof. G. Haerendel, President, COSPAR and the keynote address delivered by Prof. Sir Hermann Bondi of Churchill College, Cambridge. The presentations were grouped in four technical sessions: (a) basic thoughts on inspiration and relevance of space science education, (b) approach, curricula and techniques, (c) role of space science teachers and their training programme and (d) case studies. These presentations were followed by in-depth discussions leading to the formulation of a set of recommendations on possible models of introducing space science education, in-house training programmes utilising the vast resource of global space data, availability of innovative audio-visual tools, models and kits and possible international cooperation.

This volume, which was first published in 1991, presents a comprehensive review of all aspects of the physics of the aurorae australis and borealis. The broad topics covered relate to the different sections of a conference held in Cambridge to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Professor Sydney Chapman, FRS, who can be considered the founder of the subject in its modern form. Contributions from an international group of experts in the field discuss the physical causes and effects of the aurorae, the nightly show of dancing lights in the atmosphere, at heights above 100 km. The book is aimed primarily at students and researchers in auroral physics, but will also be of interest to magnetospheric, ionospheric and atomospheric physicists.

The subject of wave-particle interactions occurring in space plasmas has developed strongly, both observationally and theoretically, since the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts of energetic charged particles trapped in the Earth's magnetosphere over forty years ago. These wave-particle interactions are recognized today as being a most important research topic in space plasma physics. This book provides a full and systematic description of the physical theory of whistler and Alfvén cyclotron masers acting in planetary magnetospheres, and in the Sun's outer atmosphere. The book introduces research topics by examining significant problems in the subject. It gives sufficient detail on the topic that readers can go on to apply the methods presented to new problems, helping them with their own research. This book is a valuable reference for researchers and graduate students working in space science, solar-terrestrial physics, plasma physics, and planetary sciences.

COSPAR Space Research, Volume 20 covers the proceedings of the open meetings of the Working Groups on Physical Sciences of the 22nd Plenary Meeting of COSPAR in Bangalore, India on May 29-June 9, 1979. This volume is organized into four parts encompassing 50 chapters that review significant advances in space research concerning the Earth''s atmosphere and plasma envelope, as well as in the planetary science and astronomy fields. Part I describes the unique properties of the different layers of the Earth''s neutral atmosphere, including the tropical troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere. This part also deals with the measurements of atmospheric radiation, the application of remote sensing by satellites to radiation climatology, the structure and circulation of the stratosphere and mesosphere, and the theory and application of thermospheric models. Part II highlights the research studies concerning the chemistry and energetic charged particle effect in the ionosphere. This part also examines the in situ measurements of equatorial ionosphere and the distribution of singly ionized helium through backscatter observations. Part III contains surveys associated with some planetary components, such as the comets, moon, and Venus. This part specifically discusses the data obtained from different probes, models, and analytical techniques to study these components. Part IV explores research works on the sun, cosmic ray, and infrared and gamma-ray astronomy. This book is intended primarily to astronomers and space scientists and researchers.

Cospar Space Research, Volume XIX covers the proceedings of the Open Meetings of the Working Groups on Physical Sciences of the 21st Plenary Meeting of COSPAR, held in Innsbruck, Austria, from May 29 to June 10, 1978, focusing on the developments in space research. The contributions concentrate on remote sensing, middle atmosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere, and materials science in space. The selection first offers information on global development of space research, including weather and climate, material sciences in space, planets, sun, stars, magnetosphere, and high energy astrophysics. The book then takes a look at the spectral characteristics of surface phenomena and their impact on the design of an optoelectronic multispectral system; use of weather satellite data in the evaluation of water resources; and atmospheric and surface radiation balance as identified from satellite data. The compilation discusses the assimilation of non-simultaneous satellite and conventional meteorological data using statistical weights; annual variation and variability of meteorological parameters in the stratosphere and mesosphere; and physical properties affecting the existence of small particles in the mesosphere. The book also focuses on the determination of density scale-height profiles, geomagnetic effects in the exosphere, and gravity waves and tidal winds in the equatorial thermosphere. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in space research.

Cospar Space Research, Volume XVII covers the proceedings of the Open Meetings of the Working Groups on Physical Sciences of the 20th Plenary Meeting of COSPAR, held in Tel Aviv, Israel, on June 7-18, 1977. The book focuses on remote sensing of the earth''s environment, atmospheric response to solar and geomagnetic activity, ionosphere, magnetosphere, moon and planets, and cosmic dust. The selection first reviews the development of space research, including sensing the earth from spacecraft; resources, weather, and climate; solar wind and its interactions; galactic system; and the moon and planets. The book also takes a look at the depression of remotely sensed surface temperatures by a dust-laden tropical atmosphere and forest fire fuel mapping from LANDSAT. The text describes the effects of UV variability on stratospheric thermal structure and trace constituents; estimates of the stratospheric temperature variation in response to changes of the flux of solar UV radiation; and electrical conductivity measurements in the stratosphere using balloon and parachute-born blunt probes. The publication also discusses the composition of the mid-latitude winter mesosphere and lower thermosphere and global thermospheric models of neutral density, exospheric temperature, and turbopause height. The selection is a fine reference for readers interested in space research.
