This book represents a unique indispensable reflection on the interconnection between empathy and ethics. To what extent is it right to be empathetic? Can empathy be unethical? Or is there an ethical obligation to be empathetic? Do we educate our citizens and train our professionals to use the right form of empathy?Phenomenological ethics is a relatively new approach to ethics whose emphasis is put on the description of the lived-experience and the ethical phenomenon. The essays offer phenomenological descriptions of the thorny problem pertaining to the interconnection of empathy and ethics essential for professionals and scholars of different fields, such as philosophy, psychiatry, health science, psychology, and sociology.Contributors: Michael Agostinelli Jr., Elodie Boublil, Francesca Brencio, Manuel Camassa, Scott D. USA Today BestsellerPart memoir and part call to action, Interrupting Violence is a blueprint for cities across America looking for a new way to address community violence. Readers will be energized by the book Kirkus Reviews calls a "heartfelt, authentic guide for combatting community violence.”For over a decade, Cobe Williams has been a violence interrupter, a highly trained conflict resolution expert working to stop the killing. Alongside thousands of workers across the country, many of whom he trained, Cobe intervenes in street conflicts before they result in murder. Interrupting Violence follows his evolution from gang leader to vanguard of a social justice movement. More than a memoir, Interrupting Violence spans three generations of trauma to portray a radically optimistic vision for addressing urban violence.Born into the notorious Black Disciples, Cobe became a drug dealer, hustler, and shot-caller. His father, an influential gang member, was murdered before Cobe turned eleven. Five men, his father’s so-called friends, beat him to death in the lobby of a public housing project. Cobe spent years seeking answers about what happened that night. As Cobe rose through the ranks of the Black Disciples—at one time commanding over one hundred men throughout the city while still in high school—a gang war turned his world upside down. Its escalation overshadowed his ascent. Stoked by police, who fanned the conflict’s flames, the war would engulf Cobe’s friends and family, nearly costing him his life. Ultimately, Cobe would end up behind bars for attempted murder, a crime he didn’t commit.Interrupting Violence follows Cobe as he undertakes his redemption journey, offering new hope for the nation’s most violent communities. As the country wrestles with the inequities exposed by the coronavirus pandemic and the complex intersections of urban violence, racial injustice, police brutality, and poverty in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, this book provides an inspiring blueprint. Cobe’s story demonstrates how the country can resolve the issues plaguing our inner cities, taking readers into an often misunderstood and misrepresented aspect of the Black experience in America.

Feminist philosophers Barrett Emerick and Audrey Yap bring theoretical arguments about personhood and moral repair into conversation with the work of activists and the experiences of incarcerated people to make the case that prisons ought to be abolished. They argue that contemporary carceral systems in the United States and Canada fail to treat people as genuine moral agents in ways that also fail victims and their larger communities. Such carceral systems are a form of what Emerick and Yap call “institutionalized moral abandonment”. Instead, they argue that we should create communities of moral solidarity which open up space for wrongdoers to make up for their wrongs. As part of this argument, the book directly addresses one of the paradigm cases of wrongdoing often used to justify carceral systems: rape. Carceral systems that treat perpetrators of sexual violence as irredeemable monsters both obscure the reality of sexual violence and are harmful to everyone involved. As an alternative to carceral systems, Emerick and Yap argue for an orientation towards justice that is grounded in moral repair. This incorporates elements of restorative justice, mutual aid, and harm reduction. Instead of advocating for one specific and universal approach, the authors argue for multigenerational collective action that aims to build resilient communities that support the wellbeing of everyone.

With a new title that reflects the broad scope and primary concerns of the field, Introducing Health Anthropology: A Discipline in Action, Fourth Edition, provides students with a first look at the dynamic discipline of medical and health anthropology. The narrative is guided by four unifying themes. First, health anthropologists are heavily involved in the process of helping to better understand and change the world through their work in applied projects, policy initiatives, and advocacy. Second, the book presents the fundamental importance of culture and social relationships in health and sickness by demonstrating that experienced illness and diagnosed disease involve complex biosocial processes and that resolving them requires attention to a range of factors beyond biology. Third, through an examination of health inequality, the book highlights the need for research and analyses that move beyond cultural or even ecological models of health toward comprehensive and holistic biosocial frameworks. Finally, the authors emphasize that physical and mental health are intimately related to the health of the environment on which humans depend for air, food, and the other resources that make life possible. Introducing Health Anthropology gives students the tools to rethink how to achieve healthier populations, effective and fully accessible healthcare systems, and a sustainable world.New to this Edition:· New Chapter 4, “Human Evolution and Health,” examines the respective roles of genetics and sociocultural factors in health to navigate the welter of public misinformation on genetic determinism, race, and sex and gender minorities· Significantly expanded discussion of reproductive health, sex and gender, and gender equity throughout the book reflects current and controversial issues in the U.S.· Up-to-date examination of the relationship of climate change to health and social wellbeing offers students insights on how our physical world is changing and the causes of those changes· Discussion of the global impact of COVID-19 throughout the text explores the enduring changes wrought by the pandemic on human societies

This book examines the twin phenomena of radicalization and de-radicalization in a global context of political extremism and violent conflict, focusing on the approaches of governments in how they use counterterrorism to respond to radicalization and extremism. By using case studies and comparative analysis, the authors’ analysis of both Western and non-Western examples focuses on both theoretical components and practical aspects of the deradicalization process. Subjects covered include the historical context, the contemporary situation, and case studies that illustrate these aspects in different countries and across borders. The conclusions drawn also provide readers with examples of the potential solutions that states have adopted to mitigate the threats and reintegrate extreme militants into society and create a more stable world in which violent conflict is lessened.

In this deeply personal study, Hammad illuminates a deep agenda of place, meaning, and resistance in territorial struggles through the telling of a less-heard story of how women, men, and young people understand their world and their lives in the occupied Palestinian West Bank landscape. Taking a case study of a contested and divided Palestinian village situated in the heart of the Occupied Palestinian Territories and known for its sustained, non-violent protest against the Separation Wall that cuts through its lived spaces, Hammad examines how villagers live, experience, interpret, and attempt to resist infringements on their property and person. The study considers the spectrum of ways that people resist in this context, examining not only the overt weekly protests but also the everyday acts and subjectivities of resistance of its residents, young and old. It offers valuable theoretical insight into the extent and ways that meanings of place hold the potential to mediate, shape, and sustain resistance struggles through the voices and experiences of people. The backdrop of the protracted Palestinian-Israeli conflict and Palestinians’ struggle over space, place, and history—which continues to play out in the present—makes this book politically relevant and empowering as it brings voices from a secluded contested village to the world.

Each chapter touches on one of the three pillars of engagement, expression, or representation in relation to the digital world, and themes range from social media, body image and identity to feminist activism to gender and digital narratives. The contributors raise important questions about the impact of digital media in everyday life and make connections between theory and everyday accounts of gender and technology.

Have you ever looked at your life and said, “How do I fix this mess?” The secret to fixing the mess turns out not to be hot baths, or hot tea, or even hot yoga. Commonsense notions can be useful, but they can sometimes lead us astray. Common sense refers to our instincts and socially influenced beliefs about how things work. It is a vital tool for making decisions, but it’s also incomplete.Think of the dodo bird. In the early 1600s, the massive dodo held dominion over the island of Mauritius. Ninety years after crossing paths with people, it was extinct, done in by its instincts and norms—in essence, its own common sense. In our own times of change and uncertainty—job losses, medical crises, breakups, or just crises of confidence—we need something different. That something is uncommon sense, which is to say, scientific thinking. If it sounds like something you learned in high school, think again. Uncommon sense is uncommon because most of us weren’t taught how to do it. A powerful technology for managing uncertainty, it blends scientific research with practical wisdom to help us navigate hard decisions and make peace with past mistakes. It doesn’t tell us what to do but helps us understand the risks and benefits of each choice, guided always by our own values.Research methodologist Jennifer Steele harnesses lessons from teaching scientific methods to skeptics. She describes real-life dilemmas like how to how to handle conflicting medical advice, learn hard skills, manage disease risk, decide on colleges and careers, find healthy love, save for the future, and dial down the drama. This is a playbook about wrangling hard questions and getting an edge in figuring out our lives.

Ryan and Cindy Clark were among the millions of adolescents who made "Purity Pledges", meaning they promised their church and God to abstain from premarital sex. Violation could be grounds for eternal damnation. Fear, not personal values, was the actual enforcer. Meanwhile, most social functions and classrooms were coed, and dating was encouraged. Unlike other orthodox faiths, no one was expected to maintain a "plain" look in public or be reserved when fraternizing with the opposite sex. On the contrary, uncommitted young adults were supposed to be attractive and friendly without crossing obvious lines. The ultimate test was to want sex without having it. A lifetime of blissful marital sex was the promised reward, but years of sexual dysfunction and shame proved to be the more likely outcome. Till Sex Do Us Part is the moving memoir about Ryan and Cindy’s experiences as youth leaders in the heart of the purity culture movement and how their dream marriage had a rather disastrous start as the values they had been taught to ultimately took a toll on their relationship. But their story doesn’t end in disaster. Embark on the tender odyssey of how the Clarks and build an authentic, vulnerable relationship that isn't built on shame.

This book will captivate readers interested in the legacy of the Civil War, the role of military veterans after they return to civilian life, and the fight against racism in America. Stephen A. Goldman looks at the contentious post-Civil War era from the perspective of that special breed, Union soldiers who lived by the bayonet and survived to carry on the fight for equality in the decades to come. He explores the root causes of this historic contest, the changing attitudes of northern servicemen with respect to the Civil War’s purpose, and the psychological effect of involvement in what, from hindsight, was an unfinished work in the cause of freedom and equality for all Americans. Relying on unpublished letters and other primary sources, Goldman uses the veterans’ words and actions to depict their steadfast struggle to preserve the memory and understanding of why the war was fought, and to confront the implications of remembrance, commemoration and reconciliation for America's future.

Inspiring memoir of how Orthodox Christian faith animates public engagement, social justice, and moral courage in a fractured world. Drawing on lived pastoral experience rather than abstract theory, Bishop Demetrios Kantzavelos shows how Christian commitments to mercy, human dignity, and solidarity can shape concrete responses to suffering, injustice, and political conflict. At the heart of the book is an account of sacred activism rooted in encounter. Through ministry to people living with HIV/AIDS and to a man on death row, Bishop Demetrios traces how pastoral care can lead inexorably into public witness—and to advocacy for the vulnerable in society. He examines the ethical tensions that arise when Christian compassion meets the realities of violence, punishment, stigma, and institutional resistance, and reflects on the cost of bringing faith-based moral reasoning into contested public spaces.Rather than offering a programmatic blueprint for activism, the book presents a theology of presence and responsibility, grounded in Orthodox spirituality and the conviction that every human being bears the image of God. It explores how social ministry is not a departure from Christian tradition but a retrieval of its deepest resources, drawing on early Christian practices of care, advocacy, and nonviolence. This paperback edition includes a new preface in which the author reflects on how his faith continues to inspire his work for justice amid today’s religious and political landscape. Addressing polarization, moral fatigue, and the temptations of withdrawal or despair, the preface invites readers to consider how they, too, might respond faithfully and constructively to the challenges of the present moment.Written with clarity, humility, and moral urgency, this book speaks to enduring questions about faith in action and the responsibilities of religious witness in public life.

As the first president to occupy the White House for an entire term, Thomas Jefferson shaped the president’s residence, literally and figuratively, more than any of its other occupants. Remarkably enough, however, though many books have immortalized Jefferson’s Monticello, none has been devoted to the vibrant look, feel, and energy of his still more famous and consequential home from 1801 to 1809. In Jefferson's White House, James B. In this expanded edition of The Evil of Banality, Elizabeth Minnich argues for a tragic yet hopeful explanation of “extensive evil,” her term for systematic, normalized harm-doing on the scale of genocide, slavery, sexualized dominance. The book now includes a new preface, new chapter, and expanded afterword addressing ongoing extensive evils, the paradox of lying, and the importance of developing the thinking without which conscience remains mute. Extensive evils are actually carried out not by psychopaths, but by people like your quiet next-door neighbor, your ambitious colleagues. There simply are not enough moral monsters to do the long hard work of extensive evils, nor enough saints for extensive good. In periods of extensive evil, people little different from you and me do its work for no more than a better job, a raise, the house of the family “disappeared” last week. So how can there be hope? Such evils are neither mysterious nor demonic. If we avoid romanticizing both the worst and best of which humans are capable, we can recognize and say no to extensive evil, practice and sustain extensive good, where they must take root – in ordinary lives.
