The characteristics of software systems are undergoing dramatic changes. We are moving rapidly into the age of ubiquitous information services. Persistent computing systems are being embedded in everyday objects. They interact in an autonomouswaywith eachother to provideus with increasinglycomplexservices and functionalities that we can access at any time from anywhere. As a con- quence, not only do the numbers of components of software systems increase; there is also a strong qualitative impact. Software systems are increasingly made up of autonomous, proactive, networked components. These interact with each other in patterns and via mechanisms that can hardly be modeled in terms of classical models of interaction or service-oriented coordination. To some extent, future software systems will exhibit characteristics making them more res- blant of natural systems and societies than of mechanical systems and software architectures. This situation poses exciting challenges to computer scientists and software engineers. Already, software agents and multi-agent systems are recognized as both useful abstractions and e?ective technologies for the modeling and building of complex distributed applications. However, little is done with regard to e?- tive and methodic development of complex software systems in terms of mul- agent societies. An urgent need exists for novel approaches to software modeling and software engineering that enable the successful deployment of software s- tems made up ofa massive number ofautonomous components, and that allowus to control and predict their behaviour.

The fourth internationalworkshop,“EngineeringSocietiesin the Agents World” (ESAW 2003) was a three-dayevent that took place at the end of October 2003. After previous events in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Spain, the workshop crossed the Channel, to be held at the premises of Imperial College, London. The steady increase in the variety of backgrounds of contributing sci- tists, fascinating new perspectives on the topics, and number of participants, bespeaks the success of the ESAW workshop series. Its idea was born in 1999 among members of the working group on “Communication, Coordination, and Collaboration” of the ?rst lease of life of the European Network of Excellence on Agent-Based Computing, AgentLink, out of a critical discussion about the general mindset of the agent community. At that time, we felt that proper c- siderationsofsystemicaspectsofagenttechnologydeployment,suchasackno- edgement of the importance of the social and environmental perspectives, were sorely missing: a de?ciency that we resolved should be addressed directly by a new forum.

The aim of the CEEMAS conference series is to provide a biennial forum for the presentation of multi-agent research and development results. With its p- ticular geographicalorientation towards Central and Eastern Europe, CEEMAS has become an internationally recognised event with participants from all over the world. After the successful CEEMAS conferences in St. Petersburg (1999), Cracow (2001) and Prague (2003), the 2005 CEEMAS conference takes place in Budapest. The programme committee of the conference series consists of est- lished researchers from the region and renowned international colleagues, sh- ing the prominent rank of CEEMAS among the leading events in multi-agent systems. In the very competitive ?eld of agent oriented conferences and workshops nowadays(suchasAAMAS,WI/IAT,EUMAS,CIA,MATES)thespecialpro?le of CEEMAS is that it is trying to bridge the gap between applied research achievements and theoretical research activities. Our ambition is to provide a forum for presenting theoretical research with an evident application potential, implemented application prototypes and their properties, as well as industrial case studies of successful (but also unsuccessful) agent technology deployments. This is why the CEEMAS proceedings volume provides a collection of research and application papers. The technical research paper section of the proceedings (see pages 11–499) contains pure research papers as well as research results in application settings while the application papers section (see pages 500–530) contains papers focused on application aspects. The goal is to demonstrate the real life value and commercial reality of multi-agent systems as well as to foster communication between academia and industry in this ?eld.

The idea to initiate a series of workshops to be entitled "Engineering Societies in the Agent's World" (ESAW) originated in late 1999, among members of the working group on Communication, Coordination, and Collaboration of the Intelligent Informa tion Agents special interest group of AgentLink, the European Network of Excellence for Agent Based Computing. By that time, the convergenceof scienti?c and technolog ical progress in numerous areas, including software engineering, distributed problem solving, knowledge based systems, and dynamic pervasive networking had gained sig ni?cant momentum. As a result, the reality of multiagent systems was now a given. In the eyes of the proposers and supporters of ESAW, these developments led to a new and manifest need, that was being left all but uncovered by the existing range of conferences and meetings. A platform that would overcome the disparate roots of the multiagent systems ?eld by placing a clear focus on an integrative level of anal ysis, namely: arti?cial societies populating a world encompassing the natural and the arti?cial, comprising autonomousentities and their environment.

Creating Personalities for Synthetic Actors
Towards Autonomous Personality Agents
AvRobert Trappl,Paolo Petta

Skickas inom 10-15 vardagar
Progress in computer animation has gained such a speed that, before long, computer-generated human faces and figures on screen will be indistinguishable from those of real humans. The potential both for scripted films and real-time interaction with users is enormous. However, in order to cope with this potential, these faces and figures must be guided by autonomous personality agents. This carefully arranged volume presents the state of the art in research and development in making synthetic actors more autonomous. The papers describe the different approaches and solutions developed by computer animation specialists, computer scientists, experts in AI, psychologists and philosophers, from leading laboratories world-wide. Finally, a bibliography comprising more than 200 entries enable further study.

The rich programme of ICIDS 2009, comprising invited talks, technical pres- tations and posters, demonstrations, and co-located post-conference workshops clearly underscores the event’s status as premier international meeting in the domain. It thereby con?rms the decision taken by the Constituting Committee of the conference series to take the step forward: out of the national cocoons of its precursors, ICVS and TIDSE, and towards an itinerant platform re?ecting its global constituency. This move re?ects the desire and the will to take on the challenge to stay on the lookout, critically re?ect upon and integrate views and ideas,?ndingsandexperiences, andtopromoteinterdisciplinaryexchange, while ensuring overall coherence and maintaining a sense of direction. This is a signi?cant enterprise: The challenges sought are multifarious and must be addressed consistently at all levels. Emotion pervades human life in general, and human communication in particular, and this sets information technology a challenge. Traditionally, IT has focused on allowing people to accomplish practical tasks efficiently, setting emotion to one side. That was acceptable when technology was a small part of life, but as technology and life become increasingly interwoven we can no longer ask people to suspend their emotional nature and habits when they interact with technology. The European Commission funded a series of related research projects on emotion and computing, culminating in the HUMAINE project which brought together leading academic researchers from the many related disciplines. This book grew out of that project, and its chapters are arranged according to its working areas: theories and models; signals to signs; data and databases; emotion in interaction; emotion in cognition and action; persuasion and communication; usability; and ethics and good practice. The fundamental aim of the book is to offer researchers an overview of the related areas, sufficient for them to do credible work on affective or emotion-oriented computing. The book serves as an academically sound introduction to the range of disciplines involved – technical, empirical and conceptual – and will be of value to researchers in the areas of artificial intelligence, psychology, cognition and user—machine interaction.

The wide range of papers at ICIDS 2010, held in Edinburgh November 1-3, 2010, was testament to both the number and variety of researchers now investigating this ?eld. Some papers addressedkey theoreticalproblems in the ?eld: howto reconcile interactivity and narrative structure; how to make complex digital systems - cessibletothecreativeauthor;whatprocessesandmetricsareneededtoevaluate the outputs of IDS systems. Others addressed IDS in speci?c domains: in e- cation; enhancement of automated sports commentary; therapeutic approaches to trauma; location-aware presentation of culture and history; computer games. IDS systems now employ not only conventional desktop systems, but also lar- scale immersive display systems, and mobile devices; as well as modalities such as ?lm and video, which remain important sources of knowledge and experience.Inatrulyinter-disciplinary?eld,ICIDS2010servedasaforumforthediscussion of ideas, experiences and achievements of researchers with very di?erent ideas and assumptions. The ICIDS 2010acceptancerateswere24%for long papersand 46%for both long and short. This re?ects the high standards applied by the members of the Program Committee. Posters and demos rounded out the conference to create an atmosphere of interactivity. In addition, seven pre-conference workshops and tutorials allowed more intensive discussion of speci?c themes. Three keynote speakers supported the inter-disciplinaryrangeof ICIDS 2010 and the ?eld's natural ties between academic research, the arts and industry.
