This volume comprises papers from the following three workshops that were part of the complete program for the International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT) held in Prague, Czech Republic, in March 2002: XML-Based Data Management (XMLDM) Second International Workshop on Multimedia Data and Document Engineering (MDDE) Young Researchers Workshop (YRWS) Together, the three workshops featured 48 high-quality papers selected from approximately 130 submissions. It was, therefore, difficult to decide on the papers that were to be accepted for presentation. We believe that the accepted papers substantially contribute to their particular fields of research. The workshops were an excellent basis for intense and highly fruitful discussions. The quality and quantity of papers show that the areas of interest for the workshops are highly active. A large number of excellent researchers are working in relevant fields producing research output that is not only of interest to other researchers but also for industry. The organizers and participants of the workshops were highly satisfied with the output. The high quality of the presenters and workshop participants contributed to the success of each workshop. The amazing environment of Prague and the location of the EDBT conference also contributed to the overall success. Last, but not least, our sincere thanks to the conference organizers – the organizing team was always willing to help and if there were things that did not work, assistance was quickly available.

The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is playing an increasingly important role in the exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web and elsewhere. The database c- munity is interested in XML because it can be used to represent a variety of data f- mats originating in different kinds of data repositories while providing structure and the possibility to add type information. The theme of this symposium is the combination of database and XML te- nologies. Today, we see growing interest in using these technologies together for many Web-based and database-centric applications. XML is being used to publish data from database systems on the Web by providing input to content generators for Web pages, and database systems are increasingly being used to store and query XML data, often by handling queries issued over the Internet. As database systems incre- ingly start talking to each other over the Web, there is a fast-growing interest in using XML as the standard exchange format for distributed query processing. In today’s networked world of linked heterogeneous, pervasive computer systems, devices, and information landscapes, the intelligent coordination and provision of relevant added-value information at any time, anywhere, by means of cooperative information agents becomes increasingly important for a variety of applications. An information agent is a computational software entity that has access to one or multiple, heterogeneous, and geographically dispersed data and information sources. It proactively searches for and maintains information on behalf of its human users, or other agents, preferably just in time. In other words,itismanagingandovercomingthedi?cultiesassociatedwithinformation overload in open, pervasive information and service landscapes. Cooperative - formation agents may collaborate with each other to accomplish both individual and shared joint goals depending on the actual preferences of their users, b- getary constraints, and resources available. One major challenge of developing agent-based intelligent information systems in open environments is to balance the autonomy of networked data, information, and knowledge sources with the potential payo? of leveraging them using information agents. It provides an interdisciplinary forum for researchers, users, and developers, to present and discuss the latest advances in research work, as well as prototyped or?eldedsystemsofintelligentagents.Theconferencecoversthecompleterange from theory to application of agent and multiagent technologies. MATES 2004 was conducted - asanintegralpartofthe5thInternationalConferenceNet.ObjectDays2004 along with the - 8th International Workshop on Cooperative Information Agents (CIA) 2004 - Autumn meeting of FIPA (Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents) - PrototypeandProductExhibitionofAgentRelatedPlatforms,Frameworks, Systems, Applications, and Tools As such all these events together may have formed the biggest agent-related event of this year in Europe and one of the biggest worldwide.The call-for-papers attracted about 60 submissions from all over the world. After a carefulreviewing process,the internationalprogramcommittee accepted 22 high-quality papers of particular relevance and quality. The selected cont- butions cover a wide range of exciting topics, in particular agent analysis and security, agent negotiation and control, agents and software engineering, s- ulation and agents, and agent policies and testing. Exciting highlights of the conference were the invited talks, by Jim Odell on Agent UML 2.0: Too Radical or Not Radical Enough?, and Cristiano Castelfranchi on Emergence and C- nition: Towards a Synthetic Paradigm in AI and Cognitive Science.Moreover, several agent-related tutorials were conducted.

This yearmarks anexciting time in the XML-database space:XQueryis moving closer to becoming a full W3C Recommendation, and the "Big 3" database vendors (IBM, Oracle, Microsoft) are expected to release XQuery support in theirrelationalDBMSs,joininganumberofexistingopensourceandcommercial products. Thus, we are very pleased to feature an industrial paper (describing theXML-speci?cfeaturesofMicrosoftSQLServer)aswellas14researchpapers. XSym's focus this year was on building XML repositories, and papers discussed the following topics: indexing support for the evaluation of XPath and XQuery; benchmarks and algorithms for XQuery and XPath evaluation; algorithms for constraint satisfaction checking, information extraction, and subtree matching; and applications of XML in information systems. This year, XSym also coordinated its e?orts with the Database and P- gramming Languages Symposium, DBPL 2005. These are the proceedings of the 8th International Workshop on Cooperative Information Agents (CIA 2004), held at the Fair and Congress Center in - furt, Germany, September 27–29, 2004. It was part of the multi-conference Net. ObjectDays 2004, and, in particular, was co-located with the 2nd German Conference on Multiagent Systems Technologies (MATES 2004). In today’s networked world of linked heterogeneous, pervasive computer systems, devices, and information landscapes, the intelligent coordination and provision of relevant added-value information at any time, anywhere, by means of cooperative information agents becomes increasingly important for a variety of applications. An information agent is a computational software entity that has access to one or multiple, heterogeneous, and geographically dispersed data and information sources. It proactively searches for and maintains information on behalf of its human users, or other agents, preferably just in time. In other words,itismanagingandovercomingthedi?cultiesassociatedwithinformation overload in open, pervasive information and service landscapes. Cooperative - formation agents may collaborate with each other to accomplish both individual and shared joint goals depending on the actual preferences of their users, b- getary constraints, and resources available. One major challenge of developing agent-based intelligent information systems in open environments is to balance the autonomy of networked data, information, and knowledge sources with the potential payo? of leveraging them using information agents. Interdisciplinaryresearchanddevelopmentofinformationagentsrequires- pertise in relevant domains of information retrieval, arti?cial intelligence, database systems, human-computer interaction, and Internetand Web techn- ogy.

This volume comprises papers from the following three workshops that were part of the complete program for the International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT) held in Prague, Czech Republic, in March 2002: XML-Based Data Management (XMLDM) Second International Workshop on Multimedia Data and Document Engineering (MDDE) Young Researchers Workshop (YRWS) Together, the three workshops featured 48 high-quality papers selected from approximately 130 submissions. It was, therefore, difficult to decide on the papers that were to be accepted for presentation. We believe that the accepted papers substantially contribute to their particular fields of research. The workshops were an excellent basis for intense and highly fruitful discussions. The quality and quantity of papers show that the areas of interest for the workshops are highly active. A large number of excellent researchers are working in relevant fields producing research output that is not only of interest to other researchers but also for industry. The organizers and participants of the workshops were highly satisfied with the output. The high quality of the presenters and workshop participants contributed to the success of each workshop. The amazing environment of Prague and the location of the EDBT conference also contributed to the overall success. Last, but not least, our sincere thanks to the conference organizers – the organizing team was always willing to help and if there were things that did not work, assistance was quickly available.
