This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International XML Database Symposium, XSym 2003, held in Berlin, Germany in September 2003.The 18 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 65 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on XML-relational database management systems, XML query processing, systems and tools for XML data processing, XML access structures, stream processing and updates, and design issues.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International XML Database Symposium, XSym 2004, held in Toronto, Canada in August 2004 in association with VLDB 2004. The 15 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from around 60 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on Xquery processing, searching, ranking, and mapping XML documents; XML constraints checking and correcting; XML processing; and clustering, indexing, and statistics.

This yearmarks anexciting time in the XML-database space:XQueryis moving closer to becoming a full W3C Recommendation, and the "Big 3" database vendors (IBM, Oracle, Microsoft) are expected to release XQuery support in theirrelationalDBMSs,joininganumberofexistingopensourceandcommercial products. Thus, we are very pleased to feature an industrial paper (describing theXML-speci?cfeaturesofMicrosoftSQLServer)aswellas14researchpapers. XSym's focus this year was on building XML repositories, and papers discussed the following topics: indexing support for the evaluation of XPath and XQuery; benchmarks and algorithms for XQuery and XPath evaluation; algorithms for constraint satisfaction checking, information extraction, and subtree matching; and applications of XML in information systems. This year, XSym also coordinated its e?orts with the Database and P- gramming Languages Symposium, DBPL 2005. The resulting program included not only presentations of the papers in this proceedings, but also a joint DBPL- XSym keynote talk by Giuseppe Castagna, developer of the CDuce language for XML processing, and a joint panel on open XML research problems and challenges.The organizers would like to express their gratitude to the XSym Program Committee and external reviewers for their e?orts in providing very thorough evaluationsofthesubmittedpapersundersigni?canttimeconstraintsandto- crosoftfortheirsponsorshipandfortheuseoftheMicrosoftConferenceMana- ment Toolkit. The theme of the XML Database Symposium (XSym) is the convergence of database technology with XML technology. Since the first International XML Symposium in 2003, XSym has continued to provide a forum for academics, practitioners, users and vendors to discuss the use of and synergy between advanced XML technologies. XSym 2006 received 32 full paper submissions. Each submitted paper underwent a rigorous review by independent referees. These proceedings represent a collection of eight excellent research papers. Their focus is on building XML repositories and covers the following topics: XML query processing, caching, indexing and navigation support, structural matching, temporal XML, and XML updates. The organizers would like to express their gratitude to the XSym program c- mittee for their efforts in providing very thorough evaluations of the submitted papers under significant time constraints. The OOIS series of conferences has provided a forum for the presentation and exchange of academic research and industrial experiences within the ?eld of information systems, based on object-oriented technology. The 8th International Conference on OOIS was held in the University of Montpellier from 2nd to 5th September 2002. The conference focused on the - sign, maintenance and implementation of web-based information systems. The ?rst day consisted of preconference workshops. The workshop themes included the specialization/generalization hierarchy, reuse, optimization in web-based - formation systems, and model-driven software development. The main conference program also included four invited papers, namely "C- porate Semantic Webs" by Dr. Rose Dieng, INRIA, France, "A Framework for De?ning E-business Models" by Prof. Yves Pigneur, University of Lausanne, Switzerland, "GRID in E-business" by Pierre Sabloni'ere, IBM, France, and "The Latest Development on Cognitive Informatics" by Dr. Yingxu Wang, University of Calgary, Canada. The conference attracted 116 papers from more than 20 countries and the program committee accepted 34 regular papers and 17 short papers.The selected papers included the following themes: - advanced object-information systems, - web-based information systems, - knowledge management in object information systems, - CORBA, - e-business, - software metrics, - object databases.

This book constitutes the joint refereed proceedings of four workshops held in conjunction with the 8th International Conference on Object-Oriented Information Systems, OOIS 2002, in Montpellier, France in September 2002. The 30 revised full papers presented together with four workshop summaries were carefully reviewed and selected. In accordance with the workshop topics, the papers are organized in topical sections on managing specialization/generalization hierarchies, reuse in object-oriented information systems design, efficient Web-based information systems, and model-driven approaches to software development.

In fact, CAiSE is positioned at the core of these tumultuousprocesses,hostingnewemergingideas,fosteringinnovativeprocesses of design and evaluation, developing new information technologies adapted to information systems, creating new kinds of models, but always being subject to rigorous scienti?c selection.

Since its first edition in 2003, the XML Database Symposium series (XSym) has been a forum for academics, practitioners, users and vendors to discuss the use of and synergy between databases and XML. The previous symposia have provided opportunities for timely discussions on a broad range of topics pertaining to the theory and practice of XML data management and its applications. XSym 2007 continues this tradition with a program consisting of three research sessions, two keynote talks and a panel. We received 28 full paper submissions, out of which 8 were accepted for publication in these proceedings. Each submitted paper underwent a rigorous and careful review by a minimum of 4 independent referees. The contributions in these proceedings are a fine sample of the very best current research in XPath and XQuery processing, XML Updates, Temporal XML and Constraints. This volume also contains two invited short papers by the XSym 2007 keynote speakers: Leonid Libkin (University of Edinburgh, UK) contributed a thorough discussion of Normalization Theory for XML, while Erhard Rahm (University of Leipzig, Germany) contributed an interesting overview of the work on Dynamic Fusion of Web Data carried out at his - search group. This year, XSym will top its program off by an exciting panel with the title “The Generation Y of XML Schema Matching”. It was proposed and is organized by Avigdor Gal from Technion – Israel Institute of Techn- ogy.

XSym 2009 continued this XSym tradition with a program consisting of 15 papers and a keynote shared with the 12th International Symposium on Database Programming Languages (DBPL 2009). We received 26 paper submissions, out of which eight papers were accepted as full papers, and seven as short/demo papers. Each submitted paper underwent a rigorous and careful review by four referees for long papers and three for the short ones. The contributions in these proceedings are a fine sample of the very best current - search in XML query processing, including full text, keyword and loosely structured queries, stream querying and joins, and materialized views. Among new theoretical advances we included work on a lambda-calculus model of XML and XPath, on m- ping from the enhanced entity-relationship conceptual model to the W3C XML Schema Language, on transactions, and extensions to XPath. Finally, work on data parallel algorithms, compression, and practical aspects of XQuery, including query forms and the use of Prolog are also part of this volume.

We received 20 paper submissions, out of which 8 papers were accepted as full papers, and 3 as short papers. Each submitted paper underwent a rigorous and careful review by four referees. The contributions in these proceedings are a fine sample of the current research in XML query processing, including XPath satisfiability, approximate joins, pattern matching, linear index construction for trees, dynamic labeling, and XQuery update translation based on schema. The papers focus on recent advances in detecting fu- tional dependencies, modeling complex XML twig pattern output, promoting sem- tics capability of XML keys, and searchable compression of Microsoft office do- ments. In addition, we include a paper that shares lessons learned from real XML database development.

Requiring heterogeneous information systems to cooperate and communicate has now become crucial, especially in application areas like e-business, Web-based mash-ups and the life sciences. Such cooperating systems have to automatically and efficiently match, exchange, transform and integrate large data sets from different sources and of different structure in order to enable seamless data exchange and transformation. The book edited by Bellahsene, Bonifati and Rahm provides an overview of the ways in which the schema and ontology matching and mapping tools have addressed the above requirements and points to the open technical challenges. The contributions from leading experts are structured into three parts: large-scale and knowledge-driven schema matching, quality-driven schema mapping and evolution, and evaluation and tuning of matching tasks. The authors describe the state of the art by discussing the latest achievements such as more effective methods for matching data, mapping transformation verification, adaptation to the context and size of the matching and mapping tasks, mapping-driven schema evolution and merging, and mapping evaluation and tuning. The overall result is a coherent, comprehensive picture of the field.With this book, the editors introduce graduate students and advanced professionals to this exciting field.
