Since the early 1980''s, the IFIP WG8.1 conferences have provided a forum for the presentation and exchange of research results and practical experiences in the field of Information System Engineering. The WG8.1 ''02 Conference is held in the beautiful Kanazawa area in North western Japan. The ubiquitous Web has revolutionised the way organisations communicate and work internally as well as externally and, consequently, the nature of information systems supporting business activities. Web-based systems have become the state of the art in information systems engineering in a very short time. As companies become more international in their strategies and activities, information systems themselves span the globe, led by the Internet. While the risks from failed systems may be enhanced due to higher expectations and increased complexity, we have the opportunity to learn more about the nature of information systems and to develop new engineering techniques and methods to improve the development of information services in a World Wide Web context. The aim theme of this working conference is "Engineering Information Systems in the Internet Context" and the programme address both technologies and methodologies for building them. x The call for the EISIC Conference was given international audience. The program committee was chosen from very well reputed researchers in the international information systems, web information systems and communication communities. Seventeen papers have been selected for presentation and discussion during the conference.

The objective is to advance understanding about how the object technology can empower information systems in organizations, on techniques for designing effective and efficient information systems and methods and development tools for information systems engineering. The OOIS series of conferences has provided a forum for the presentation and exchange of academic research and industrial experiences within the ?eld of information systems, based on object-oriented technology. The 8th International Conference on OOIS was held in the University of Montpellier from 2nd to 5th September 2002. The conference focused on the - sign, maintenance and implementation of web-based information systems. The ?rst day consisted of preconference workshops. The workshop themes included the specialization/generalization hierarchy, reuse, optimization in web-based - formation systems, and model-driven software development. The main conference program also included four invited papers, namely "C- porate Semantic Webs" by Dr. Rose Dieng, INRIA, France, "A Framework for De?ning E-business Models" by Prof. Yves Pigneur, University of Lausanne, Switzerland, "GRID in E-business" by Pierre Sabloni'ere, IBM, France, and "The Latest Development on Cognitive Informatics" by Dr. Yingxu Wang, University of Calgary, Canada. The conference attracted 116 papers from more than 20 countries and the program committee accepted 34 regular papers and 17 short papers.The selected papers included the following themes: - advanced object-information systems, - web-based information systems, - knowledge management in object information systems, - CORBA, - e-business, - software metrics, - object databases.

The market for information technology products is rapidly changing from a manufactur er-driven market where new products were determined by the evolution of technology, to a user-driven market where users buy only products corresponding exactly to their needs and where competition is very strong. Confronted with this market situation, hardware and software producers are being obliged to adopt new strategies, and to make a large number of products available on the market in response to a variety of different needs. As a result of the multiplicity of choice available, the design of an office system which corresponds precisely to user needs is becoming an increasingly complex task. With exactly this in mind, the Commission, as early as 1985, invited submissions of projects aiming at the development of such adequate tools in its Call for Proposals for the ESPRIT Programme, in order to assist companies in the design of their office systems. This topic was recognised as being of strategic importance, considering the low level of penetration of Information Technology in European enterprises compared to the United States and Japan. Following this strategy, the project TODOS was selected and launched. This project has successfully developed tools and methods for the definition of the functional specifi cation of the office system, as well as the system architecture and user interface -results which can be of great interest for the IT community at large.

The 26th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling in Auckland, New Zealand, hosted six workshops which allowed participants to focus their p- sentations and discussions on advanced topics that cannot easily ?t the general conference scope. Thirteen good quality proposals were received and nine were selected. Due to the similarity of their scope, two pairs were suggested to merge, leading to seven proposals. One workshop attracted fewer submissions than expected, so that its selected papers were integrated into the conference. Finally, six wo- shopswerekept.Interestingly,fourofthem(FP-UML,ONISW,QoIS,SeCoGIS) were a sequel of workshops that were held in the last few years, while two were new (CMLSA, RIGiM), exhibiting both the maturity and the innovation of the workshops. Following the call for papers, we received 114 complete submissions, from which 40 quality papers wereselected, giving an acceptance rate of 35% (a fairly standard score for workshops). The following six workshops were organized: – ConceptualModellingforLifeSciencesApplications (CMLSA2007),chaired by Yi-Ping Phoebe Chen and Sven Hartmann. This workshopaddressed the speci?c challenges posed by the large data volumes, the complexity and the data and software heterogeneity involved by life science applications. – Foundations and Practices of UML (FP-UML 2007), chaired by Juan Trujillo and Je?rey Parsons. The third edition of this workshop gathered researchers and practitioners on topics related to data warehouses, security, model transformation, state diagrams development and model quality.
