The characteristics of software systems are undergoing dramatic changes. We are moving rapidly into the age of ubiquitous information services. Persistent computing systems are being embedded in everyday objects. They interact in an autonomouswaywith eachother to provideus with increasinglycomplexservices and functionalities that we can access at any time from anywhere. As a con- quence, not only do the numbers of components of software systems increase; there is also a strong qualitative impact. Software systems are increasingly made up of autonomous, proactive, networked components. These interact with each other in patterns and via mechanisms that can hardly be modeled in terms of classical models of interaction or service-oriented coordination. To some extent, future software systems will exhibit characteristics making them more res- blant of natural systems and societies than of mechanical systems and software architectures. This situation poses exciting challenges to computer scientists and software engineers. Already, software agents and multi-agent systems are recognized as both useful abstractions and e?ective technologies for the modeling and building of complex distributed applications. However, little is done with regard to e?- tive and methodic development of complex software systems in terms of mul- agent societies. An urgent need exists for novel approaches to software modeling and software engineering that enable the successful deployment of software s- tems made up ofa massive number ofautonomous components, and that allowus to control and predict their behaviour.

The idea to initiate a series of workshops to be entitled "Engineering Societies in the Agent's World" (ESAW) originated in late 1999, among members of the working group on Communication, Coordination, and Collaboration of the Intelligent Informa tion Agents special interest group of AgentLink, the European Network of Excellence for Agent Based Computing. By that time, the convergenceof scienti?c and technolog ical progress in numerous areas, including software engineering, distributed problem solving, knowledge based systems, and dynamic pervasive networking had gained sig ni?cant momentum. As a result, the reality of multiagent systems was now a given. In the eyes of the proposers and supporters of ESAW, these developments led to a new and manifest need, that was being left all but uncovered by the existing range of conferences and meetings. A platform that would overcome the disparate roots of the multiagent systems ?eld by placing a clear focus on an integrative level of anal ysis, namely: arti?cial societies populating a world encompassing the natural and the arti?cial, comprising autonomousentities and their environment.

BIS 2010 held on 3-5 May 2010 in Berlin, Germany was the 13th in a series of international conferences on Business Information Systems. The BIS conference series has been recognised by professionals from its very beginning as a forum for the exchange and dissemination of topical research in the development, - plementation, application and improvement of computer systems for business processes. The theme ofthe conferencewas"Future InternetBusiness Services." A n- ber of new initiatives are already underway to address the challenges related to explosive development of Internet applications, hence the conference topics: Searchand KnowledgeSharing,Data and InformationSecurity,Web Experience Modelling. Although many people announced that SOA was dead there is - doubtedly a strong need for service-orientation. This was addressed by a topic: Services and Repositories. More and more e?ort is put on explaining and und- standing complex processes as could be seen in topics: Business Processes and Rules, Data Mining for Processes, Visualisation in BPM. Finally, the classical business aspects were covered in session: ERP and SCM.Altogether, a set of 25 papers illustrating these trends were selected for the presentation during the main event, grouped in 8 sessions. The Program C- mittee consisted of almost 100 members who carefully evaluated all the subm- ted papers. Each submission was reviewed on the average by 3.1 programme committee members. Only the best quality papers were selected, resulting in an acceptance rate of less than 30%.

Topics that do not ?nd critical feedback at the main International Conference on Business Information Systems (BIS) may experience fruitful discussion when confronted with a well-focused audience. Over the last few decades, business informationsystems have been one of the most important factors of the transition toward a knowledge-based economy. At the same time they have been subject to continuous rapid development and innovation driven both by industry and by academia. For the last 12 years these innovations were carefully observed but also shaped by researchers attending BIS yearly.
