August Nordenskiöld (17541792) förkroppsligade orden fantast, svärmare och entusiast i deras vildaste mening.
Han firade franska revolutionen genom att dansa på Bastiljens ruiner. Ändå hade han bara ett år tidigare utklädd till bonde hade svettats i ett alkemistiskt laboratorium vid Drottningsholms slott för att tillverka guld åt kung Gustav III. Dessutom spann han i hemlighet planer på att tillverka så mycket guld att hela penningsystemet omstörtades. Han skrev frenetiskt: om bergsbruk och simning, men allra helst om alkemi, Swedenborg, magi och annan mystik, som hans farbror initierat honom i. Han försökte slutligen att starta en frihetlig utopi i Sierra Leone, där han insjuknade och avled.
Det har skrivits många uppsatser och böcker om August Nordenskiöld, han har varit karaktär i flera romaner och inspirerat till konstprojekt. Men hans egna texter har varit svåråtkomliga, och flera av skrifterna har legat opublicerade i dammiga källararkiv, fram tills nu.
