The book describes these different options and proposes a roadmap for achieving a successful transition, avoiding any economic breakdown or ecological disaster. A comprehensive range of technologies and R&D requirements are described for reducing energy consumption and improving fossil fuels, nuclear energy, hydrogen as an energy vector plus renewable energy sources such as biofuels, wind, solar and geothermal. This is the first book in a range to be published by the SCI, an established member-led organisation linking science and business, and its publishing partner, John Wiley and Sons. The range is designed to stimulate the knowledge exchange that is critical to success whilst this book examines why we need a sustainable energy system and looks at the spread of technologies that must be harnessed if we are to move successfully away from our current dependence on fossil fuels. Dr Rojey's experience as director for sustainable development at IFP (formerly L'Institut Francais du Petrole) informs a concise and knowledgeable approach to one of the world's most pressing challenges.
