Writings on Social Policy and Welfare
RICHARD TITMUSS (1907-1973) had no formal academic training but as Professor of Social Administration at the London School of Economics he developed a research programme which brought him international recognition. At a time when the British welfare state and a free national health service were in their infancy, he was influential in their development through his body of research and active commitment. He was, as David Reisman puts it in the Introduction to this collection, 'a social administrator, a political economist, a sociologist, a socialist, a philosopher, a leader and a visionary', with an 'uncompromising sense of purpose'.
