The novel also depicts the story of the miserable love that brought together the hearts of Claude and Christine. Critics believe that this novel is the most influenced by the character of Emile Zola himself, out of all his novels, especially the parts of Rogon Macar. It is said that the novelist "Sandoz" in the novel is the character of Zola himself, and he was depicted in the novel and through the character of the novelist about the conditions of the creative writers and painters in That era.
