You have chosen a regency setting for your books. What is it about that environment that fascinates you, and when did you discover that interest?
Regency England has always been a very popular setting in the historical romance genre. It's far enough in the past that it's imbued with a fairytale-like quality in ways that something set in the 20th or 21st centuries can't be. But it's modern enough that writers can make their characters think and act in ways that resonate with contemporary readers.
As for me, I started writing books set in regency England for a simple reason – I liked to read books set in regency England. I can't remember the first time I read a "regency" but I know I was devouring them by the time I was about thirteen or fourteen.
What are your feelings towards the series on Netflix? What is it like to see your books coming to life on the screen?
I LOVE the show. I wouldn't change a thing. From a writer's standpoint, the adaptation process is fascinating. The Netflix series isn't a word-for-word adaptation (nor should it be!) and yet it follows the general storyline of The Duke and I, and the characters are still absolutely true to who they are in the books. After I read the first script, two things were clear to me: the writers had adapted the story in the best possible manner AND I would never have thought of doing it that way. Which really illustrates that books and television are two very different media.
I am asked quite frequently if the characters look the way I imagined them. I don’t have much of an answer because I'm not a very visual writer, and I don't have clear pictures of the characters in my head while I'm writing. The Netflix show has filled out all the empty spots in my imagination, which is really exciting.
What’s your most memorable reading experience?
What a difficult question! I've had so many, but the book that comes to mind first is Code Name: Verity by Elizabeth Wein. I couldn't put it down, and I ended up finishing it at two in the morning. I was absolutely WRECKED. I just lay in bed, frozen, staring at the ceiling for at least thirty minutes. I truly couldn't move.
