The Writings of Charles W. Chesnutt: The Complete Short Stories

Stephanie P. Browner is the General Editor of the series The Writings of Charles W. Chesnutt and was awarded an NEH Scholarly Editions grant for the first volume. She is the founder and co-editor of the Charles W. Chesnutt Archive (recipient of NEH and NHPRC grants). Her scholarship has appeared in New England Quarterly, North Carolina Literary Review, PMLA, American Quarterly, and various essay collections, and she is the author of Profound Science and Elegant Literature: Imagining Doctors in Nineteenth-Century America (2004). She has served as dean and provost at The New School and Berea College.Richard Yarborough earned his PhD at Stanford University. He then joined the faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he taught for over forty years. An active editor and scholar, he has published on authors such as Frederick Douglass, Pauline Hopkins, Charles Chesnutt, and Richard Wright. He has received UCLA's Distinguished Teaching Award as well as the Darwin T. Turner Distinguished Scholar Award presented by the African American Literature and Culture Society. In 2012 he was given the American Studies Association's inaugural Richard A. Yarborough Award in Mentoring, which is named in his honor.Antje Anderson (Ph.D., English, Rice University, 1998) is an assistant editor at the Charles W. Chesnutt Archive (Center for Digital Research in the Humanities, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. For many years, she was literature professor and chair of the Department of Languages and Literatures at Hastings College (Nebraska, U.S.A.), with a research focus on the cross-cultural currents in nineteenth-century fiction and its reception, but has now shifted her focus to scholarly editing, digital archives, and the reception of Black writers and visual artists in the U.S. in the late nineteenth-century.Sarah Wagner-McCoy is an Associate Professor of English and Humanities at Reed College, where she teaches American literature, and directs the Mellon Initiative for Environmental Humanities. Her research focuses on the representation of land, labor, and educational access in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century regionalist and realist fiction. A recipient of the Graves Award in the Humanities for excellence in teaching, she encourages students to explore connections between the literary imagination and cultural history, and the relationship between writing and social change. Wagner-McCoy received her PhD from Harvard University, MA from University College Dublin, and BA from Columbia College.
