Endangered Plants of the Southeast

Endangered Plants of the Southeast: Stories of Persistence and Hope is an illustrated celebration of the ninety-one federally endangered plant species native to the Southeastern United States. Blending art, science, and storytelling, Laura C. Martin introduces each species through striking watercolor portraits and accessible, engaging prose that brings these rare plants—and their stories of persistence and hope—to life.Organized by ecosystem—forests, grasslands, wetlands, and Florida uplands—Endangered Plants of the Southeast explains why these plants matter, what threatens them, and how conservationists are working to secure their future. In one chapter, Martin relates tales of rediscovery, collaboration, and recovery, showcasing the resilience not only of the plants themselves but of the people dedicated to protecting them. In another chapter, she offers specific suggestions for how everyone can contribute to this cause. At a time of accelerating biodiversity loss, Endangered Plants of the Southeast offers both information and hope. It invites readers to go beyond facts and statistics to see these plants as essential parts of the Southern landscape. Through art and narrative, Martin affirms that conservation works—and that persistence, partnership, and public engagement can shape a more hopeful environmental future.
