Planet of Garmaeel

It is difficult to consider Planet of Garmaeel as belonging in a single genre. In one sense, it could be considered science fiction. On the other hand, some parents might find it helpful in putting their kids to sleep. And yet, it is also a sad commentary on the state of affairs in the world.Garmaeel, like any wealthy and powerful person anywhere, has no trouble finding unscrupulous people to help him achieve his goals. However, as is always the case, levels of loyalty vary. That is why having the army of monkeys-turned-humans at his disposal is so crucial to Garmaeel's plans—they are both obedient and reliable.Due to the current political and social restrictions in Iran, it is not uncommon for one to resort to a tongue-in-cheek way of expressing one's opinions. In her Persian language articles, Ms. Asar, too, has had to use this strategy.Although the situation in America is vastly different from that in Iran—and other countries—there are also similarities. It is these differences and similarities, and the freedom to freely express one's opinions in America, that have brought this book to life.Planet of Garmaeel is Tarlan Asar's first book translated into English, and I, as the translator, am happy and grateful to have been a part of it.Reza Mashayekhi
