Censorship in England (Barnes & Noble Digital Library)

In Elizabethan times, the Master of Revels was originally charged with keeping politics and religion out of court entertainment. This 1913 history traces the institution of censorship through the reign of Charles II (1660-1685), when plays were banned for sexual content, through Georgian issues such as the battle over George Bernard Shaw’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession.
