Yoga is primarily a spiritual practice. The aim of "The House of Wisdom" is to encourage personal and spiritual growth, along with creative and skilful living. It draws on a variety of great wisdom traditions, including Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity. The first part covers starting out on the spiritual path, the problems along the way, and the yogic understanding of the authentic Self. The second looks more closely at the yogic tradition, with chapters on mantra, paths to the sacred and the classic Eightfold Path of Yoga. The third and fourth parts include exercises from Psychosynthesis psychology, affirmations and practices for relaxation and discovering the spiritual dimension of the Whole Self.

Swami Dharmananda Maharaj, Director of the Dharma Yoga Centre, is renowned for being both an inspiring teacher and one of the most practical people in her field. She became associated with the Bihar School of Yoga in Northern India in 1973 and was later initiated as a sannyasin of the Saraswati Dashnami (order founded by Shankara) by Swami Satyananda Saraswati, who gave her the task of spreading the wisdom of yoga to lay people in the West. In recent years she has taken a keen interest in different forms of healing, and the Tantric master Sri Jammu Maharaj helped her to explore new possibilities in her work and officially gave her the title of Maharaj. While being deeply grounded in her own tradition, she has comfortably moved beyond religious boundaries to touch and benefit those with different perspectives to her own. Many of her students have come from a variety of faiths, including Christianity, Judaism, Jainism, Buddhism and Hinduism, and have found that her teachings helped them to deepen their understanding of their tradition. Santoshan (Stephen Wollaston) began his spiritual quest 30 years ago when introduced to a basic meditation and mantra practice. He is a close friend of, and was initiated by, Swami Dharmananda Saraswati, has written articles on Indian religions and spiritual unfoldment, and compiled, edited and co-authored Tune in to your Spiritual Potential and the particularly popular 21 Steps to Reach your Spirit with the ex-Benedictine monk and internationally renowned medium Glyn Edwards. He has given talks on philosophy, transpersonal growth and comparisons with mystical experience and Eastern wisdom, and organised retreat and development courses. Glyn Edwards (author of the Foreword) is regarded as one of the UK's finest mediums and lecturers on spiritual and psychic science and empowerment. He runs development workshops worldwide and has been a popular senior course tutor at the Arthur Findlay College for many years.
