When Silence Shapes a Life: A Source-Based Autobiographical Self-Study of Silence, Identity, and Responsibility

Born in Sweden to immigrant parents and without Swedish citizenship until 1958,Thomas Virro grew up with the feeling of being between worlds. His father's silenceabout war, displacement and the family's past left questions that followed him throughschool, work, love and fatherhood. When Silence Shapes a Life brings together three autobiographical works and readsthem against one another. It traces how statelessness, lost language, shame, fear andinherited silence can shape a person's choices - without turning explanation intoexcuse. Through archive research, philosophical reflection, close self-examination andrecurring scenes of vulnerability, Virro searches for the links between what happenedto him, what he did, and what he passed on.This autobiographical self-study is candid about failure, careful with evidence, andopen to the possibility that understanding the past may still change how the future islived.
