Edith Wharton (1862–1937) was an American author whose life and work spanned, criticised and came to exemplify the turn of the twentieth century. She produced novels, novellas, short stories, poetry and non-fiction on design, travel and culture, as well as a memoir with social comedy and realism that is often compared to Jane Austen. In 1921 she was the first woman to be recognised with the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her novel capturing the rigid social mores of the 1870s New York elite, The Age of Innocence. Her most famous novels include The House of Mirth (1905), Ethan Frome (1911), The Custom of the Country (1913), Summer (1917) and several short stories. Her novels are particularly celebrated for capturing a formative period of American history with naturalism, emotional intensity and opulent description.

   För knappt 100 år sedan var new york inte så stort och de med mycket pengar hade ganska små problem vilket i princip är vad boken handlar om. Ett lättläst sätt att sätta sig in i en svunnen epok.
