   Boken skildrar Kerouacs andliga sökande i 50-talets Kalifornien. Som ett tidsdokument över den generation som senare kom att blomma ut i 60-talets hippies är den intressant, men Kerouacs buddhistiska intresse är alltför anpassat efter hans egna behov och tidigare kristna idévärld för att kunna ge läsaren någon inblick i dharma, och samtidigt som jag som läsare fylls av en hoppfullhet och framtidsvision genom hans beskrivning av sina vänner, så ger mig Kerouacs begynnande alkoholism mig känslor av sorg och nedslagenhet.
