Ivo Andric är en av de absolut mest kända författare från forna Jugoslavien. 1961 fick han erkännelsen för sitt genialiska författarskap i form av Nobelpris med följande motivering: "for the epic force with which he has traced themes and depicted human destinies drawn from the history of his country".
Han är hyllad av samtliga nationstillhörigheter i forna Jugoslavien för levande berättelser om miljön samt liv som utspelades i dessa trakter.
Denna bok är baserad kring en bro och en liten stad belägen mellan Serbien och Bosnien under en tid från 1500-talet till år 1914. Maktskiftning, miljöväxling, människornas liv från kärlek till hat beskrivs i denna bok. Boken ger en dold bakgrund till de inte allt för gamla händelser i denna skärningspunkt mellan öst och väst, mellan många religioner och raser.

Parochialism
By way of introduction, it is important to stress the fact that Andric was awarded a prize for this book. This book is not a masterpiece. Instead, bigotry and preconceived ideas characterize the book. Andric describes Muslims as atavistic, intransigent and evil. He does this implicitly; in a subtle and sophisticated manner. The literary value of the book is unquestionable but Andric's prejudice of Muslims seriously undermines the overall quality of the book. Thus. in my view, the book is myopic and biased. Subsequently one may wonder why was Andric awarded a prize. I speculate that books that criticize Islam are highly popular and valuable in our western societies.
