He studied economics and political science at the University of Bremen, the New School for Social Research, New York, and the Lille University of Science and Technology. He holds a PhD in Economics and a bachelor's degree in political science. He has participated in numerous research projects on European integration including the EU-funded project 'Reconstituting Democracy in Europe', and has taught at the University of Bremen.
