John Muir

John Muir transformed the way America understands wilderness. Known as the father of the national parks, his writing inspired presidents, shaped the modern conservation movement, and helped establish the belief that wild places should be protected for their beauty, spiritual value, and importance to future generations.Born in Scotland and raised in a strict religious home, Muir found freedom in nature. After immigrating to the United States, he became an explorer, writer, naturalist, and environmental activist whose journeys through Yosemite and the American West changed public attitudes toward the natural world. In this expanded biography, Mary Colwell reveals the faith, vision, and adventurous spirit behind one of the most influential environmentalists in American history and shows why John Muir's legacy matters more than ever in an age of climate change and ecological loss.
